Man, I really want to get started on my new hobby - buying bottom-end homes for a couple of grand, putting 5 or 10 into it to get it livable, then just having like really down and out people live there, or as like temporary shelters or hostels or something...
http://www.bid4assets.com/auctio… and others similar - you could do a few of these a year, and really quite make a difference to some people somewhere..

put in a max price of 5,000
http://maps.google.com/maps?mrt=…for the amount you would spend on a shack in a place like san fran, or los angeles, you can buy an entire city block,
hell the city might even give it to you if you are going to do something with it.

First time I went to Bflo I was awestruck at the number of abandoned historic buildings that were available - just beautiful some of them, in real need of saving. The people I met said that the place boomed in the first few decades of the 20th century, but then no more money came in, so downtown blocks didnt keep getting redeveloped and theres a whole wealth of 1910- era commercial buildings there that would ahve been demolished in other towns. Parts of downtown are like a museum - the fact that no current business is there just emphasises the timely architectural features - I'd recommend anyone with even a passing interest in architecture or design to go and wander around downtown buffalo, honestly it's one of my favorite places in the states, a decaying gem.

yes you can 'buy' a house for that price, but your municipal taxes are a massive liability. You're essentially buying the obligation to repurchase that house (that you wouldn't want to live in) again every year. More than half of Detroit has left in the last few years. The tax-base is so withered that the last few suckers who actually hold property are the only ones paying to service the entire metro area. THAT is the reason why landmark buildings are abandoned, and why you can buy a house for $1 plus back taxes. Detroit is not going to get better for decades, if ever.

i bought a home for $200, with a zipper on the front door and a little bag to carry it all around in.

Would be a nice idea...
In Minnesota homes start at bidding for $500, but you can't get anything for 2K. You need to have tens of thousands, if not more depending on getting a good deal.

Here in NYC, foreclosures were going for 100K-200K, not chump change.
When you add liens and taxes, your talking big money...

now when we talking houses here. can any one here explain what the tax on a house here in the state is based on.
i seen houses in the same price range having taxes from 1000 to 5000 dollars. its wicked.

mikotondria3,
do you fix the houses your self, or do you have contractors? or both?
