    this was a great flick

  • gabe0

saw it last night. i was bored out of my mind about 85% of the movie...

most of it played out like a children's movie (so over the top corny), with the exception of the cursing, blood, and occasional boob.

also, that chick malin akerman was so horribly wrong for this movie. it's impossible to take her seriously in any scene she's in. she was fine playing the ditzy girl in the heartbreak kid, but she's just obnoxiously bad in this movie.

    ...my 2 cents anyway!

    • 85% is an unfair over-estimation. more like over 70% of the movie...gabe

I thouroughly enjoyed the flick. I expected a letdown, as Alan Moore adaptations usually are just that. But I like it a lot, and visually it's hell of an acheivement.

My only problem with it I guess, is that I never felt like the movie had its own soul or energy. I've read the book a number of times, and it's as faithful an adaptation as you're going to get. But in a way, that becomes the problem with the flick. Trying too hard to be the book and not its own film.
But again, I really dug it despite that.

I love this comic and thought the movie was okay, however I am convinced that for all his purported love for the comic, Zach Snider fundamentally does not understand what makes it so good. The comic was great because it is a deconstruction of both the medium of comics and the nature of heroism in the sociopolitical climate of the 80's. It's loaded with symbols and allegories that draw direct connections between it's world and the state of hero comics at the time, meaning most of the comic's relevance is tied to it's medium.
Making such a faithful adaptation may be a service to the comic's skin, but Snider decidedly left the internal organs of Watchmen strewn behind him on the editing floor.

If you'd like, you can stretch for relevance in Nixon's psuedo-dictatorial rule, Cold War fear-mongering and corporate figure heads that wield too much power, but Snider hasn't done anything to make any of this current. He's done nothing to address the tropes of modern superhero films. He's done nothing to address the current political climate.

No wonder Dave Gibbons was behind this and Alan Moore wasn't, Dave is the only one being celebrated here.

so i just watched this yesterday and my thoughts are:

    1) the actress who plays laurie, although lovely and decent, was WAY too young and it just didn't work
    2) whereas moving back and forth between time periods worked in the book, it failed on screen. they needed to actually adapt it.
    3) the tracks they used were sometimes inappropriately placed ("sound of silence" during comedian's burial) and didn't help solidify the time period for people unfamiliar w/the story. overall, the soundtrack was distractingly cheesy (remember leonard cohen's "hallelujah"?...that was just too much, i almost LOLed)
    4) WTF did they do to billy cruddup's mouth as dr. manhattan? it seemed badly animated...why? really annoying.
    5) i felt like i was attending an ass picnic for the first 1/2 hour. asses everywhere.
    6) they should've left bubastis out.

that being said, the geek in me really enjoyed effects, camera angles, sets and colours. i thought rorschach was bang-on, as was ozymandias and the comedian. it was too long etc, but i'm still glad i saw it.

books good, movie wasn't horrible but wasnt as great as the the book, on its own if the book didnt exist i'd say 8/10. i could have gone without some of the regular hollywood hero action sections. but most were probably for trailer material and to please investors, because nothing appeal more to the masses then mediocrity. it just didnt have the depth and development as the book and it just didn't transfer as well across mediums. but im glad to see it increased the sales of the book, look at the movie as a trailer for the book.

Thought it was great; saw the director's cut, don't know the comic so the story was refreshing to me. But I thought 300 was excellent too, so what do I know.

Seeing The Spirit the next day made me really sick btw, best parts were Scarlett's boobs and Eva's ass...

    • 300 is dope both in book and movie.. watchmen was only good in book.e-pill
