I knew the novel before seeing the movie. It help. Its a great, well build story. I think they have done a great job with the movie.
people who want an action movie with lots of fights will obviously not like it.

I saw this movie not knowing anything about the Watchmen. The movie did not dive into what the watchmen are. The only character they developed was Dr. Smurf Cock. Speaking of Dr. Smurf Cock, why is it significant that he be naked through so much of the story?
After it was over I still don't have a clear idea what the Watchmen are and why they have super strength/powers. The Hulk is a widely known comic story so they didn't need to go into how he became the hulk. The Watchmen doesn't have that luxury.
- Read the book. The significance of dr manhatten being nakec de is strictly to stay true to the book. you can find more of the back stories they didn't have time for in the book as well.madmanGerald

- yeh they are just rejects like batman...except for dr smurf cockblog
- No way... the leader dude at the end is supposed to be the smartest fastest guy on earth. No powers?Mellimelvin

It was fun, better than I thought after reading some of the reviews.

I just saw it tonight and I really enjoyed it. I thought it was quite a good adaptation and they probably made the right decisions on what didn't make the final cut, like the doctor's story line.

I dunno - it was weird, some bits where incredible some crap.
Obviously it looked great, and dr manhattan, rorschach were crazy good etc etc...
But some of the acting and dialogue was sooo bad and childish ie That moment when rorschach's mum yells at him "I should of had that abortion!". Yikes.
- he had to say a lot about rorschachs mother in a short time. His mother shouting the cruelest thing possible at him summed up his childhood.madmanGerald

So here's the thing... I read the book in my early twenties and loved it. I'm now 38 and I was quite looking forward to seeing it. So I re read the book this year and felt very ambivalent towards it. The story has no relevance to me now. An omnipresent Nixon, threat of nuclear war, it's all pretty old hat. The graphic novel is beautifully drawn sure but it's storyline and dialogue is so sprawling and portentous it's only it was never going to translate that well.
I would agree Synder has done a brilliant job of faithfully mimicing the book but therein lies its downfall. The framing devices and attention to detail evoke a nostalgia for the book but nothing more. In fact the slavish desire to retain as much as possible of the original is it's biggest downfall, making the film too slow and far, far too long.
So if you're in your teens or twenties and adore the book you'll probably love this. Now, approaching my forties I found it dull and humourless and frankly, a bit of mess. And if you haven't read the book and you watch this expecting a superhero, comicbook extravaganza, you'll be confused, bored, utterly bewildered and wondering what all the fuss is about. Word of mouth will most likely kill this film.
- It does become harder to be entertained, as one grows older. Good thing I still like 22 year old girls.
