Yeah i love DIN, the weight and face depends on the subject you are working on, i'd have to advise against rounded, though.

I fucking hate DIN, not because it's ugly but because it is so fucking overused, I hate lazy designers who think stylish, techy, contemporary=DIN, classy=Gotham, fancy=Museo (what a crappy G it has, my dear!), and so on. There are so so many new and old fonts which would work at least as good, but nobody seems to bother looking.
- may i have the pleasure to see your work?typist
- why?jimbojones
- you seem to be very knowledgable about design and typeface...so i guess you might have some works i can learn fromtypist

I can't stand DIN. It's poorly drawn imho. The caps are half way decent, but the lowercase is entirely lacking in grace, and the built-in kerning is awful. It sits on an awkward line between monoline and grotesque in its contrast, or lack thereof. There's no job for DIN that can't be accomplished by something more thoughtfully drawn. I don't think a fair comparison can be made with Gotham. People are using Gotham so much these days because of Obama's campaign, and because it seems to fit with the current zeitgeist (don't ask me to describe that, it's too vast).
I think Gotham will weather its current trendiness, because H&FJ know how to craft a damn good typeface that transcends fads. Gotham is no exception, in fact it's some of their best work up there with Chronicle, Mercury, Requiem, Hoefler Text & Display, Didot, etc... I don't think the same can be said of DIN, especially since its day in the sun seems to have passed. It was all the rage ca. 2000, not nearly seen as much right now.

- TFJ knows what people buy, Interstate is still bought like crazy, but it belongs to FB and meanwhile looks dated. So he went along and drew Gotham - a fresher Interstate. And now he added new widths, for fuck's sake, who would use that compressed crap which loses all the character Gotham has? But I'm telling you, people will buy that shit like crazy. "Oh finally I can set my 2cm colums in Gotham without hyphenation". I don't know when that started, but it was well before Obama IMO.jimbojones

I agree with you gramme. I do think The light and medium weights of Din in caps are nice, for setting headlines and small pieces of text, however the lc are quite ugly (but not in an akzidenz way which just has buckets of character). Its awkward to set large blocks of text in din and its quite characterless and utilitarian. But then again, it was designed for use in signage, not setting large amounts of text.
- I still like apex though, quirky.ian
- apex is nice, especially since they've fixed their first releasejimbojones
- jimbo, I think it's interesting that you like Apex, but not Gotham. Apex is not well drawn imho.gramme

There are many characters in DIN that seem completely out of place to me, as if Jan-Pool didn't know if he updates the font for today use or wants to stay true to tradition. The ß, the commas and quotes, all numbers except the 2 (especially the 1 is so dated), the K, the §...
