I can't stand DIN. It's poorly drawn imho. The caps are half way decent, but the lowercase is entirely lacking in grace, and the built-in kerning is awful. It sits on an awkward line between monoline and grotesque in its contrast, or lack thereof. There's no job for DIN that can't be accomplished by something more thoughtfully drawn. I don't think a fair comparison can be made with Gotham. People are using Gotham so much these days because of Obama's campaign, and because it seems to fit with the current zeitgeist (don't ask me to describe that, it's too vast).

I think Gotham will weather its current trendiness, because H&FJ know how to craft a damn good typeface that transcends fads. Gotham is no exception, in fact it's some of their best work up there with Chronicle, Mercury, Requiem, Hoefler Text & Display, Didot, etc... I don't think the same can be said of DIN, especially since its day in the sun seems to have passed. It was all the rage ca. 2000, not nearly seen as much right now.

    • TFJ knows what people buy, Interstate is still bought like crazy, but it belongs to FB and meanwhile looks dated. So he went along and drew Gotham - a fresher Interstate. And now he added new widths, for fuck's sake, who would use that compressed crap which loses all the character Gotham has? But I'm telling you, people will buy that shit like crazy. "Oh finally I can set my 2cm colums in Gotham without hyphenation". I don't know when that started, but it was well before Obama IMO.jimbojones
