This has bothered me for a while...
I'm always curious about people who criticize sub cultures, and what their "all knowing" take on the world and how we should act, dress and what we should interest ourselves in.. I've criticized my fair share, I will admit but I've grown to realize that we should just let it be. It seems to still happen around here a great deal. So Please, enlighten me.
Let me know the way you great social wizards have figured out how to not be a subculture of your own, and how you've transcended any sort of culture generalizations and how you've gained to right to pass judgement on those who are, in your opinion, clearly less savvy...

this is about U2 isn't it?

almost everyone is judgemental. it make's us feel slightly more in charge and that our own opinions / choices we're the right ones. you're completely correct in your statement. if you find an answer to this one my friend you'll have solved the human condition. they'd be no war.

are you featured in the video?

i guess, the day i get a job (finally) and can move out of my mum's bedsit i might feel confident enough to not be judgemental. i look forward to that day. although, at 43 i might be leaving my chance at emotional growth a little late.

I just find the hostility towards anyone who seems to have good intentions is foolish. I know we think we've got a hold on racism, but we, as a species seem to try and find any way to segregate and alienate sects of society. It's so commonplace that it goes unchecked 90% of the time, just like racism back in the day.
Now, I'm not comparing remarks about sub-culture society to carry the same weight as the oppression of entire races, but you get what I'm saying.

i don't have an answer for this just yet but thought i would comment only because it is one of the exact questions that was going through my mind on my drive home tonite. i recently posted some personal music of mine for free download and the first responses were nothing but criticism and vulgar images with claims that it was spam and sh*t. these same people have never posted anything slightly creative themselves but have somehow "gained the right to pass judgement" themselves. i know their type, they are the ones that i was in art school with that are now working the fedex counter at kinkos helping us ship our art across the country. they have clearly created their own subculture.

maybe this issue should be addressed via a facebook group?

Well, if you're clearly less savvy, you probably don't like it pointed out.

Well, nobody can say that I didn't try.

You know, I think most of the time the judgement is just banter.. it's nothing more than verbal sparring. I don't think it's worth taking to heart.
I figure a lot of designers spend their working lives trying to think laterally, while making judgements about quality. This is probably going to overflow into all aspects of their lives.
We live in cynical times, and sometimes an earnest comment can seem like the equivalent of a lamb to the slaughter.

be yourself and find the reason you exist through your own thoughts and experiences, read some existentialist literature.
- aliasimaging0
people that actually take the time to upload vulgar stock images to express themselves are not what i call designers.
- brains0
Well, if I was actually asking advice by starting this thread, and not being facetious, I'm pretty certain doesnotexist would have a point. But That's the thing, I'm addressing the active participators in this hate-mongering. I'm quite certain of my existence.

I am with you, brains.

people who criticize you are the strop that makes your blade sharper. Thank them for your contribution, and sometimes, we ourselves are the strop for someone else's blade. It's just the way it is.
People can say whatever they want, but can they stop you? Nope.
- That said, man hipsters and their fixed wheel gear piss me off...and don't get me started on the new U2...TheBIueOne

People who criticize me, I could care less, I just don't understand the current state of people finding something wrong with everything except for what they do. It baffles me to think that these people can truly think that their opinions are all-seeing and without fault.

- I understand, it just seems so strange to see it even with a small community like qbn.brains

- It's like a small sample of how the world really is.juhls

Perhaps QBN really is just a sample of what the world holds, but you'd imagine when you have small controlled groups like this, you'd be able to instill some sort of understanding that blatant judgment is foolish, and a waste of energy.
I mean, up with the funny gifs, pic of the day, and the odd tiff. But I don't see why a group of (mostly) real and (mostly) intelligent, good-head-on-the-shoulders type people can't just come to terms with the fact that we all look equally ridiculous, regardless of our section or sub-section in society?

If someone dresses a certain way because they wish to be viewed as 'trendy', and they don't involve any originality in their selection of props ... should we blindly view them as 'trendy, fashionable, interesting' types (as they'd hope), or is it okay to be critical and slightly-disparaging?
- You blindly view them as a human participating in this crazy world actually.brains
- to judge is human.. it unavoidable.********
