"asking for almost $.5M and would settle for $50k+"
Isn't that sort of thing simply called a "scam?"
"You owe us half a million dollars!! But we'll get off your back for 50k."
- i'm only assuming that's how it will unfold judging from past busts... no one seemed to pay more than 100kbrandelec

^ exactly TBO, they're asking for almost $.5M and would settle for $50k+

Since when can a watchdog group assign and collect fines? Isn't this what the judicial branch of the government is all about?
- They probably threaten a lawsuit and the companies settle...TheBlueOne

"The Business Software Alliance (BSA), an industry trade group whose goal is to stem software piracy, announced today that five Canadian companies have paid over of $175,000 in damages to the BSA for having pirated software on their computers."seems the lot are design-related companies. wouldn't doubt adobe apps call for hefty fines

..and thus the rise of open source software will continue...

99% sure it was a snitch - the notice was specific on the apps installed on each desktop. not sure really under what jurisdiction it would fall under.
just the fact that half the time apps don't work because people accidentally run windows update which bugs everything out and i'm sure it's the same with adobe updates
- didn't really affect me since qbn was working just finebrandelec

I wonder if cracking down on this kind of thing will be happening a lot more so that the pirated company can get money during these economic times.

My guess is that adobe knows who's stealing their software and who's paying for it. Wouldn't be hard to track through various apps "phoning home" during updates. For the most part that info probably wouldn't be enough to launch a lawsuit against a company.
But if an employee snitched them out that may be different. Especially if it involved 20 computers.

under what jurisdiction do they need to pay the fine?
Wouldnt someone need a court subpoena or warrant, to even consider going into the work place and search through the hard drives for licenses , I dont get it.
- brandelec0
they're discussing a way outta this one like reformatting all the hard drives and purchasing a few legit licenses or somehow proving that although they're installed they're not in use.
wouldn't the BSA know you haven't had any licenses registered under your name/business for the past 10 years and all of a sudden you have a few.

Sounds like the BSA (Business Software Alliance)

Worked at a place few years back also with some pirated stuff. Felt like snitching on them after I had left also.

they're suspecting a former designer because the list was specific on creative apps: photoshop, illy, flash, corel, etc

You're going to tell us about how you're going to walk into the owners office, cross your arms, lean against the door frame, smirk and say "So, how you doin'?"
