Another thing which has been bothering me over the past few years is the idea that - Science is a new religion.
What I mean by this is that we now tend to view religion and faith with great scepticism. However, when we are given data and statistics by scientists, we take them as fact. A kind of blind faith if you like. Yeah, we know lot's of things can be explained by science, but when you start talking about the origins of the universe... how can anyone be 100% positive about any of this stuff?
I guess what I'm saying is that man has always tried to make meaning of the world, whether this be in form of faith, religion and now science.
Where there is no meaning, one creates meaning.

^the trick there is the data and statistic thing mate.
science has no concept of absolute fact by the way, the closest you will get is a "highly likely" from a scientist if they are in science mode. They are in activist mode if you hear them refer to things in absolutes
- to think about science in terms of faith is to completely fail to get it, by the waykelpie

there is an entire channel on TV, where serious, straight faced people talk about Hollywood Celebrity news as if it was important.

I do get science kelpie and I knew I would get a response of this nature, rightly so, 'cos I can't articulate my point well. And I know I'm in danger of sounding like Karl Pilkington! ; )
But the "highly likely" comment is a valid one. There are no absolutes and there can be huge differences in opinion amongst the scientific community.
Like you say (and this is the one thing which they do have on their side) is that (the good one's) don't claim to know the truth or have all the answers.
I guess my argument has more to do with the reporting of scientific discoveries and how stats can be manipulated and by third parties, which, in turn causes the public to get a skewed version of what the scientists have found.

You're right tho. Our sense of reality is fundamentally challenged throughout our lives that it's almost impossible to have faith in the world as it appears. Ultimately you need to balance your faith in your own personal experience of the world with an appreciation of the subjectivity of your position. Only the vain hang on to absolutes and fear relativism, as their beliefs are too closely intertwined with their sense of identiy.
A Nietzschean "imposing your own meaning on reality" is often required, which brings with it, deep responsibility which few want to shoulder.
