this is the most overhyped horrible recording of my lifetime.
Sounds like the Shins on acid recorded underwater. As cool as that might seem to sound, it's not.
- Uhh, no. And the shins fucking suck.brains
- You have to be on acid to relate this album to the Shins, dude.Justin
- My hyperbole reading on your post in dangerously in the red, btw.Justin
- only the first song sounds like the shins under water. good observation. but Sung Tongs is my favorite still. this one sounds like its jsut about to break into a house beat a lot.redrum

- whew, thanks. i thought i was having an acid flashback.armsbottomer

Agreed, i got this due to the hype on *here* a month back, and i was largely unimpressed...

True. To each their own. I think it's going to be a pretty important album later on. I really like it, and I think they are one of the few bands that bother to try to keep things interesting. To me, it's like the beach boys melded with paul simon and micro house, not the shins on acid and underwater.

effing love it.

I think one of the problems with music these days is that it's so accessible that people will listen to albums without knowing context. Some people, unfamiliar with animal collective (or those who may have listened to 1 or 2 albums, or certain songs) might listen to this and wonder what all the hype is about. Those who have been following the band since their very early days definitely see this in a different light, it's an important step for them, and for music in my opinion.
Nowadays, you can just download something you see on pitchfork, give it a listen, and wonder what the fuss is about. We rarely appreciate the time and effort, as well as creative thought that goes into albums. I think the fact that music is so accessible, it becomes more disposable. Sad really.

im listening to it right now again, just for QBN. I may have not given it a proper chance cuz that first track was dope.

I got the Beach Boys Pet Sounds influence the first time I listened to it. Then I got the Shins acid underwater vibe the second.
I'm actually still listening to try and figure out why pitchfork would give this a 9.6.
Pet Sounds BTW is the most overhyped horrible recording of my fathers lifetime.
- No way man. A lot of great pop music of our days would not exist without that album.brains
- Also, forget pitchfork. Listen to it on your terms.brains
- +1 hahaJustin
- Yeah Pitchfork has been on a downward spiral the past few years.fooler2
- Tho you are FUCKING WRONG. :|
Justin - Not even that, music press is there to hype. Albums should speak to you without the aid of a review.brains

I think that they are one of the few bands these days that has natural ability and honest creativity. They don't succumb to a scene, and they don't seem to play any "parts". So many "indie" bands these days fall victim to playing into trends, and they just come and go. Animal collective seems to not give a shit. Music needs bands like that these days, otherwise everything would remain completely flacid and uninventive.

I like this new one, Pet Sounds, The Shins and Paul Simon. I'm surprised how much of a cult following Animal Collective has had. They're very psychedelic, which I love and even though they have a very unique sound, to me they're reminiscent of the late 60s San Francisco sound: Country Joe and the Fish and more jam bands from that era.
- horton0
they're definitely an acquired taste...
lots of people just hearing them for the first time thinking WTF! this hype is nonsense, but to the fans who have been following and listening to their sound grow, MPP is an epic album.
that said, Sung Tongs is still my fav :)
