I have to say I agree about the latest identity work not being very imaginative. I have always been a fan of their beautiful and classic designs. That said - I think it also shows a lack of creative vision when EVERY project EVERY pentagram office does is black, white, red and maybe throw some grey in. And only in Adobe Caslon or Akzidenz Grotesk. You can spot it as another churned out pentagram grid-based project from a mile away. Albiet a good looking one.

Most things suck when you examine them closely

having worked with one of the partners in the past i think what makes them easy to hate is that they convey a sense of elitism and almost overly knowledgeable sense of graphic design, when in fact its not what you know about design but what you make. anyhow, their work is a tad safe but the market they target falls into that category as well.

please read whole thread before commenting, idiots

thread marked as blasphemy.

We also have to remember that the client has partial control over any design project. Some of the stuff that isn't blowing your mind may have been compromised a bit.

- yep, as do producers, PM's, layers of art and creative directors, rounds and rounds of revision. --->threadpost
- original idea and design get so convoluted after so much scrutiny by so many cooks in the kitchenthreadpost

"hmmmm.......
i'd worry about making a website that works before you go start bashing established work and great historical design institutes.

I can't really get my head around why slack felt like they needed to change it so much - the first and foremost purpose of the logo aspect of a brand is that it's recognisable and somewhat unique - slack's was and fit with its culture, '#relevant'. I really can't see why the decided to hoy the proverbial baby out with the bathwater. It seems so completely unnecessary.

Also, as for the thread itself - P are now behind on payment for two projects and are ignoring my emails, so they suck.

MBT - unfortunately you can't spot it as Pentagram because of the many imitators out there. This style is pretty timeless because of the order implied by gridwork and their fonts are classics that are used extensively elsewhere also.

it's natasha jen's fault

Some of their is cookie cutter and somewhat repetitive. I would not say that they necessarily suck though... Perhaps overated!

I've noticed that a lot of their stuff looks so-so on the screen but get's your attention when applied in the real world.

Pentagram churns out good design. They just happen to be better salesmen.
In design school, a Bullshit 101 class should be just as important Design fundamentals.

Pentagram has their style. They pull it off. I don't consider them crap at all.

That's a valid point, pepe. The kind of people who go to RubyTuesday or enjoy the NY Philharmonic are yuppie scum.

I'm sure even Pentagram have difficulty handling asshole clients with multi-million dollar global accounts.
Saying they suck is pretty naive and ultimately, stupid.
