I haven't read any of this thread, but it keeps popping up and just by the title alone it irks me. Pentagram are the singlemost enduring and lasting iconic company of the 20th graphic design industry. I'll be willing to bet that across all ages and disciplines, the one company name most people would think of when asked to name a graphic design consultancy would be Pentagram.
Its bloody ridiculous to say they suck.

This is how I see it from architectural perspective. An architect is not an architect with out clients. As per designer, if there are no clients, he / she is simply expressing art form through design.
Its the boundary of limits and rules the define a challenge. When the canvas is blank and no over sight, it lacks element of selling through. Without selling through, it is mainly an expression, not problem solving. Designers problem solve and sell. Not just make things look pretty or interesting for sake of self expression.
- the bigger and richer the client, the more boring their logo should be!magnificent_ruin
- I know plenty of designers and architects who aren't great salesman, so you can't sell me.moveinspace

just admit it, you applied for a job there, and got shot down...

thats it? their logos suck? and therefor pentagram sucks? something tells me you really just don't understand the full breadth of what a company like pentagram does and why they are so good at it.
you're basing your decision on your own purely aesthetic opinions, which mean very little unless you prove your own credibility. as in, why are you in a position to make such a blanket statement, what would you compare them to that "doesnt suck"? etc.- an opinion can be based on whatever they like, its just thier opinion....set

fate_ I wish I could agree, but as much as you may push the 'perfect' solution under their nose, they still might not accept it.
Still, if you are going to put compromised work in your portfolio, you have to accept that it can be criticised in that context. No one is immune to that.

threadpost is right! They didn't just have to make that logo! They had to present it to the client too! On a big piece of paper, no less!
Hell, they might have gone all out and projected it from a projector! The logo! The logo would have been HUGE! 6 foot tall across the whiteboard!
You just don't understand!
- I love the VOILA moment when the paper is flipped upmagnificent_ruin
- its bigger than the biggest logo there chief.threadpost

The key to being a designing sales man / woman is.. that you can sell your perspective. If you cant sell it, the work becomes diluted, it is no longer your own.

I'm glad that my post has at least got some people thinking... even if my initial post was poorly written and not thought through.
I do stand by my initial opinion that many of their recent logos are boring. It's my opinion, and I'm entitled to it.
- Many of their recent logos do look like college interns created them.utopian

Also, I challenge any of you to name a design firm or individual that is revered like Pentagram and has been established within the past 20 years. Sagmeister might be the only exception, and even he is borderline.
Pentragram's reverence stems more from the age of the firm than the quality of their work. You're all bowing down to a bunch of talentless baby-boomer hacks.
Seems like if you put out mediocre work for 20+ years, people assume there is something worthy about the work or the firm.

I think that designers should take in account all the variables before commenting on another designer's work. It's easy to say "they suck" before knowing that a certain project might have been done according to "what the client wants". Sometime, you just get some clients that just want what they are seeing. Wich sometimes give "boring" or "uninspiring" results.
Even with multi-million contracts, a dumb client is a dumb client.

hahaha, fate only turns up on qbn when there's a thread like this

For all you wankers making the "perception is reality" argument, get the hell out of this thread. Reality is reality, and the reality is that most of their work is milquetoast...BORING.
No one cares how Pentagram pulled the wool over the clients eyes. That isn't respectable, nor a long-term strategy.

Damn right magnificent_ruin. I've got hate in my heart and I gotta let it out.

You guys need to chill. Obviously the thread title was just an attention grabber... which worked quite well. You have to admit some of their recent stuff is boring. What about this logo makes you want to eat at Ruby Tuesday?
The fact that it looks cheap? Then again, with this economy... maybe they are geniuses.
