Are think only judging from its graphic design or brand interpretation as a whole?

As I have said before, Pentagram has a really interesting dynamic to their work, especially their latest logos. Great in application, questionable in stand alone.
The thing is, they always follow through projects to create an abundance of creative, dynamic collateral that really ties the logo and the brand together. So there.
- yes... the logos on their own suck... I can have that opinionAmicus

- I agree this sucks. So does Ruby Tuesday.joeth
- What is not to love about that logo? The beer glass is reminiscent of the old Miller Moon logo, while overall it looks like an eye a la UBISoft.deldelesc

I like the new coors one, at first I did hate it though.

Yeah they have been around more than 30 years. That alone says something about their work.
- I did mention last 5 years... I know they have done stellar work in the pastAmicus

There are no great designers, there are great sales man / woman, who happen to design.

Amicus I agree with you!

this one is better.
http://www.hillmancurtis.com/ind…Paula Scher knows what she is talking about and her style certainly permeates through a lot of their more recent work. whether you are a fan of that style is another question. They are hit or miss for me but I would not disrespect them by saying they suck.

Not everything they do is a grand slam, but I'd say the same about my own work, or anyone else for that matter. The majority of their work—from all of their offices—is well-considered and well-executed. I think of the Mohawk promotions Bierut's team did last year. Gorgeous stuff.
- in summation, they are as good as grammemagnificent_ruin
- HAHAHAHA @ rand7point34
- Hahaha, no they kick me in the teeth any day of any week. Just making a point about how we all win some, then lose some :)gramme

any firm is only as good as its recent work. What they did in the 70s 80s or 90s for that matter doesn't count if they have burnt themselves out and lost their creativity.

"a certain project might have been done according to "what the client wants". "
I despise this excuse for poor work. You never, ever give the client want they want. You give the client what they NEED. If the two happen to coincide, so be it, but you give the client what they need, not what they happen to want.

I haven't read any of this thread, but it keeps popping up and just by the title alone it irks me. Pentagram are the singlemost enduring and lasting iconic company of the 20th graphic design industry. I'll be willing to bet that across all ages and disciplines, the one company name most people would think of when asked to name a graphic design consultancy would be Pentagram.
Its bloody ridiculous to say they suck.

This is how I see it from architectural perspective. An architect is not an architect with out clients. As per designer, if there are no clients, he / she is simply expressing art form through design.
Its the boundary of limits and rules the define a challenge. When the canvas is blank and no over sight, it lacks element of selling through. Without selling through, it is mainly an expression, not problem solving. Designers problem solve and sell. Not just make things look pretty or interesting for sake of self expression.
- the bigger and richer the client, the more boring their logo should be!magnificent_ruin
- I know plenty of designers and architects who aren't great salesman, so you can't sell me.moveinspace

just admit it, you applied for a job there, and got shot down...
