I like to wonder how this guy i knew from high school who went to work at microsoft, and bragged at college parties about how everyone who worked there was going to retire at 35 is doing, and if he's 4 years away from that or not.
- toe_knee0
MS own 50% of the company i work for. But I'm in news/media and everyone wants to read about the doom and gloom in a resession so should be ok

"Everyone who worked there was going to retire at 35"
Only if they joined before the mid 90s
- This guy would have started around 97 / 98mg33

Wow, 17% layoff would be huge. They'll even more homeless people littering the street here.

Indeed, it's a huge amount, but after reading so many MS developer journals/blogs, you really start to get a feel for how much internal bloat they have... bucketloads of legacy teams, projects, and developers. Trimming down and getting lean is a good thing. Focus on core products... Windows 7, Zune, XBox, Office.. eliminate the excess.

A lean, mean shit machine.

They try to do too much anyway, instead of trying to make an end to end solution for every single part of a business and then having to spend extra dealing with all the security holes in a everything from a web sever to an instant message client must cost millions. Then theres all that failed social networking live spaces crap, a google maps clone no one uses, etc
Apple do it the right way, make the OS and focus on making that solid then get open source projects to fill in the gaps, Apache for the web server, PHP/Python/Ruby all out of the box for scripting.
While MS are running around writing/fixing IIS(think thats its name) web server, VBA/ASP/ASP.net and whatever security holes come with those.MS even waste time making their own version control crap (think they've just released yet another attempt at it recently) while apple just bundle svn and I bet git will be bundled with snow leopard.
Get rid I say, if they're strong enough people they'll land on their feet... if they don't then they're getting what they deserve
- WIndows servers iare a huge portion of the revenue though. MS makes its money in business not consumer like Apple.skelly_b
