you are supposed to drink to thirst but balancing your osmotic levels sometimes requires you push a little water at first–making yourself more thirsty naturally.
the caffeine can only work through the water in your cells (your electrical system) so if you are dehydrated there is no way for the caffeine to work.

the sad truth is that over time you really do damage to your kidneys from drinking coffee/espresso every day. the only way to undo the damage is to take a major holiday from the habit. and you may find that you actually have more energy that way. it's our culture not to trust our natural energy reserves (kind of like our credit culture).

I used to take wheat grass pills everday and found that after a couple weeks I had a good deal of natural energy.
I realize that giving up coffee would be a great thing, but i just can't do it. I'm too good at it - french press, great fresh ground beans. It would be torture.

I don't do anything that would be horrible for my body, so that must mean I just need more exercise.

heres what i do, and im starting to feel pretty darn good most days, and didn't use to:
No coffee (drink tea)
Excercise 3 days a week, Run a bit, lift a bit.
Get outside once a day, sunlight and fresh air is a good boost.
Snack, eat 5 times a day but small amounts.
Take fish oil (or krill oil)
Take an antioxidant while you are at it.
Think happy thoughts.

I think getting into the coffee thing is kind of self defeating. It is like any other drug, you come to rely on it. I rarely drink it anymore. I crash hard off of it.

Have a look into 'modafinil' it's not addictive or give any bad side effects. Gives you general alertness and better concentration.
