after putting this off for WAY too long, i'm finally ready to redo my company look (logo, website, print materials, etc).
i'm starting with some logo concepts. feedback please???:

this is just a rough start... i'm wanting it to look like a wave
- ukit0
How about leave out the wave entirely? It seems a little too obvious.
- akrokdesign0
yes, you need to do more concepts. do as many as you can.
- ********0
why is it so uneven
- akrokdesign0
fyi. keep it black. don't go gray/grey.

i like the wave by itself but maybe you should have some little waves before and after and maybe simplify the dots a little if needed.

don't pluralize design

If you follow Typist's advice and tidy up your effort I think you could be on to a winner. As it is though, it looks messy and even as a sketch is very hard to appreciate/crit. The beauty in this kind of logo (as evidenced in the Thompson/Reuters example) is in its neatness and simplicity.
if I were you, I'd explore having each arc of dots start big then get progressively smaller (again, as in the T/R example) and try and reduce the number of dots deployed to a minimum (I'm not saying '3 dots' - just a few less than present.
The alternating marine/dark blue example at the bottom is the most effective colour scheme, in my opinion.
Stick at it - also, I'd consider trying to get some mathscript widget (scriptographer/processing/filte... to dictate the dots' positions. You wouldn't necessarily need something that works straight-to-vector, but at least something you could use as a basis for a trace within Illy.

Oh, and I think you'd do well to put a lot more personality in the wordform - have you considered employing a decent quality fat script? Something that vaguely bridges surf culture and professional media corporatism. I hasten to suggest Bello, but that's kind've what I'm thinking.
Apologies for the verbosity - I'm viewing QBN on my desktop for once and am enjoying the feel of my shiny aloominum mac keyboard. It's a fucking joy to type on.

Why dont you just make your brand Leftwave, and use your link address as leftwave designs
- dbloc0
why don't you upload it so everyone doesn't have to download it.

how about a left hand, waving?
- Point50
i like #4... but the wave is on the right :(
- leftwave0
wow! thanks everyone for the great feedback. back to the drawing board, or should i say refinement board...
FYI - the reason for the name is that i surf goofy footed and prefer left (frontside) waves :)
- leftwave0
okay, i cleaned up the dots and modified the font. is this better???

the proportions and configurations of the dots in that mark really arent working well at all. that thompson reuters mark went through easily 100 iterations of different dots in different proportions to ensure it would reproduce correctly. shrink any of yours down a bit and they all break. also there's no sense of contrast with the sizing, and that makes it appear static. not like a wave at all which has a lot of movement and force.
i'd focus on refining the mark before you even consider type at this point. look at ways you can convey scale, movement, and power with just the dots alone.

It's still not there.
Have you tried sketching this out in analogue, away from the computer? Might help you to focus on the form a little more.

There's no 's' in design.
:)
