i'm getting ready to send some art to the printers.. i've got a 5th color and an area designated for foil stamping.. should i use two different spot colors for each? or will dropping them in two separate layers with proper labels be good enough? anyone have any experience?

Definitely separate swatches. Do as much as you can to make sure there is no confusion. If it can be cocked-up, I guarantee it will.

separate layers and swatches it is! what's everyone's personal opinion on even moving each special print specifications NEAR the artwork?
for example, copy & pasting the foil stamp area with the cutline, giving it a spot color, and just pasting it below the artwork instead of overlaying
- Added confusion I think, properly named swatches should be good enough.lherb

I put it on it’s own layer, on top of the artwork and set its give it it’s own spot colour separation, set the Fill and Stroke to Overprint. Think of the artwork layers as being laid down in the same order as the print – CMYK normally goes down first, followed by spot colours, and then embellishments last.
- yes, you want to have control over the placementSoler
- Do not overprint the spot colour though unless that is the look you are going for.lherb
- Yes. I was referring to the foil. Should have made that clear.MrOneHundred

and name the swatch and layer 'foil' or whatever...

"Think of the artwork layers as being laid down in the same order as the print" .. that's all I needed.
Thanks for the help, all.

would those "layers" in the InDesign file sow up when exported to a pdf ...just wondering
- "show" not "sow
I is sleepyalicetheblue - Depends what RIP software is being used at the other end. And what settings you export with.MrOneHundred
- thnx
never had to do this

i was probably going to send this one out via illustrator.. thinking a .eps or .pdf would work.. since it's just a biz card
- PDF. eps is for the 20th century.MrOneHundred
- ...or just send out the native Illustrator file.MrOneHundred

go into swatch options
Color type:Spot Color
Color Mode: CMYK (then make 100% Cyan or Magenta) put it on a different layer and name it FOIL STAMP.

Give them a call and ask how they prefer it.

so my file has 3 layers.. beginning from bottom to top i have a layer with the bg art that will be printed via 4cp, the second layer has a designated area in spot color for the area we want to foil stamp over.. and the layer is labeled, etc.. the final layer is the 5th color which needs to be a specific pantone so will be printing via pms..
is this a proper setup for the printers.. and through illustrator.. what would be my best approach on exporting .. i'm still a bit unclear on how to export a layer that is meant to show just where the stamp foil should be
- move the foil layer to top. spot ink won't print over foil. and if you're creating this in AI i'd talk to the printer
horton - they may prefer just a native AI so the layers are obvious. that or an AI-PDF.horton
- i think i may have phrased it incorrectly. my Foil Stamp layer sits on top of the layer that is desired to have the effect. there will be nothing being printed over the foil as i've already knocked out any specified areas in the artworksurface
- will be nothing printed on top of the foil.surface
- move the foil layer to top. spot ink won't print over foil. and if you're creating this in AI i'd talk to the printer

Make sure everything is RGB Jpegs. 72dpi.

oh geez i just read this is a business card.
just stick your front and back art on a 8.5x11 page and type out some notes for special instructions, convert all fonts to outline and send them a native AI CS2 file.
job done.

Call your foil spot "FOIL STAMP" to avoid confusion, if someone hasn't already said that. Putting it on a separate layer is a good call too, and make sure the layers are labeled clearly and logically.
Will you attend the press check? That's the only way to really have control over the job.

I'd definitely speak to the printer and ask how they'd like it - the print company I currently use would prefer me (in this example) to supply 3 separate files and a marked up proof. Don't presume anything would be my advice.
