And don't take my arguments as supportive per se of the UAW which is a corrupt shitty union that deserves whatever it gets, although I am not anti-labor in general, hisorically speaking.
- gustavfive0
it's going to effect more then just the auto companies

Interesting points made previously about the unions, some people at an old company I worked for refused to take any pay cuts so they kept their salary and the company went down about 4 months later, interestingly enough the people that didn't take pay cuts have not done very well for them selves since. It's a shame but they shouldn't have been so selfish.

If you have 2 million people out of work collecting unemployment compensation, there is your $15 billion bucks.

US hasn't made a decent car since 1970s, and they are 20 years behind asian car manufacturers. One would think they would have woken up when asian cars were becoming more and more popular some years ago, instead they continued making those huge cars with huge motors and 40s technology
Fuck em- ehh exaggerate much?Frosty_spl
- wow, you REALLY are stupid.anxiousarms

Only a stray musing... but if they go under, do you think car thefts will go through the roof? Think about it. Crime in general always rises sharply in bad economic times. As well, people will be looking to repair rather than buy new as money is tight. But many parts makers may go under, and there will be a shortage. So a lot of people will need hard to find parts which will make them expensive. What better than steal and chop domestic cars then? Also, so many desperate, out of work auto workers... who better to know how to steal and chop a car than those who build them? Plus think of the black market as people who need their domestic car repaired just can't afford it done through proper channels or sources.
Like I said, just a stray musing.

I say merge the companys and start from scratch.

I am for bailing auto companies out BUT they have to be competitive, get rid of unions or at least reduce their strong hold.
BUT the root of problems lie with in the company it self. They make crap products. Crap design. Crap marketing. Change indeed is a good thing. But giving them money wont change anything. They will just ask for more like AIG.
Lee Iacocca borrowed and paid the government back. But the current company is not even close of being what it used to be.

"We need to invade Michigan and rebuild the state from the ground up. We will be greeted as liberators, we have clear supply lines, and we can easily rebuild the auto industry with the kind of money we spend on other countries we invade. Hell, our new Secretary of State, Hillary of Clinton, spent the better part of the past year fighting for the rights of average folks from Michigan, so think of the good will we have with the public. This is very doable. Just tell Congress we will give KBR no-bid contracts to fix Detroit.
And citizens of Baltimore, Altanta, St. Louis, and DC- you better get your shit together or you are next."

I bought my wife a Ford Edge. The car is really great actually. First American car I've owned in my adult life.

I wonder if those of you cheering that this doesn't happen will still be cheering when the economy drops off a cliff because everyone at GM has lost their jobs.
Even Bush and Paulson realize how dire the consequences could be, it's not for nothing that they are considering a "backup" bailout using TARP funds. I don't think Bush is in bed with the auto unions, they are doing it because they realize what the consequences will be.

drgss, what about new Camaro, new Mustang, new Challenger. Those cars are decent, just interior quality is a crap. The most successful American car is Chrysler Voyager
- if decent means looks good but shitty gas mileage then okdoesnotexist
- how bout a standard jeep cherokee which will run and run and run? maybe not flashy but a solid buildtedismyfav

I had an 1988 chevy cavalier z24 few years back and I could get 35 mpg from it. I am really surprised, and shocked, that newer cars today aren't averaging 50mpg or more
- My sister had one, it was the biggest rattle-trap POS ever. Slowest car I've driven too.
Frosty_spl - nah dude, mine was in good shape. oil was amber when I changed it and it had some kick.doesnotexist

They probably should fail, but maybe let them fail slowly over the next 4-5 years.

They get poor mileage because of all the hippies that sue when little sally dies in an accident, because there aren't 20 airbags to protect her. New cars are much safer than 10 years ago, they aren't tin cans anymore.
- True. I read there is as much as 600lbs of safety related weight in some vehicles.ETM

Amen. This carte blanche with our money to subsidize the prolongation of sinking ships is absurd. These people can thank the UAW, who can probably count on Senator Obama to push this foolhardy endeavor through once he takes office.
