Hey TBD, you may consider Asus and the eeepc.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr…
I just read a semi-lengthy article that gave the award for best "ultra-portable" to the Asus. I think this Acer may have been included in the pack too. I can check when I get home.
- I like the aesthetics on this one better though.designbot
- I have the ASUS 1st gen. It's OK. But I'm tired of linux alreadyTheBlueOne

Or maybe not. I don't know. I have a two yea old 17" HP at home. Does everything I need t to do but in the last two weeks I started getting all these vertical lines on the screen - apparently this is some bad mojo popping up on some HP laptop models. So I figured on getting a replacement. But I figure maybe I'll just buy this little guy and take the 17-incher to my repair guy and replace the screen...even combines it would still be less than the cost of a new 17" laptop.
What do you guys think?

The new Asus eeepc comes with XP instead of Linux.
- I've red the reviews. The Acer looks better...TheBlueOne
- looks solid as well. Do what you feel. I'm sure they are pretty similar.designbot

I've seen laptops get the lines like you are talking about. Honestly if you are up for a challenge, you may consider ordering a replacement display from HP and doing it yourself. I have replaced quite a few laptop screens and I can tell you it's pretty simple. Usually you pop two plastic caps off both sides of the display hinge, unscrew two screws, unplug a data cable, and the whole screen comes off. Then just do the reverse with the replacement screen.
It get's kind of pricey if you take it into a shop, and may not be worth the investment. Doing it yourself you could save some money and make it more economical than a buying a replacement.
- mine started showing up with one. solid green vertical one pixel all the way down...only sometimes though. it looks like a ps guidelvl_13
- a photoshop guide and it trips me out. if i press right above the monitor i can get it to disapear too.lvl_13
- haha sweet. I know with dead pixels sometimes you can "rub them out" and they go away permanently.designbot

Ill tell you why not:

They don't make heavy metals and uber-deadly chemicals biodegradable enough for everyone to buy 15 computers in our lifetimes. Instead of buying inexpensive junk on a whim - save your money and spend it on something you can keep for a while.
