What's the point of going to art school only to end up wasting your money and being a starving artist? Only a handful of people make it while the rest live a life of struggle. I don't get it.

Well, there you go. Thanks for the thought.

Because you've gotta learn something. And on reflection, I'd risk wasting a couple of years of my life in the hope I would have been the next Damien Hirst. Not because I like his work, but he 'makes' a shit load of money by doing pretty much fuck all.

most artists, until very recently in modern times, were not famous during their lifetimes, and sometimes destitute.

Maybe because they have an interest in it?

Here is my latest painting, I have been painting for 25 years. This type of art cannot be done by someone who is not a serious artist, you can try but the trials of life will make you focus on your "real" job and you will stop painting after a few years. That is why professional artists must exist, the fate of new art depends on it.

sometimes a love of art, sometimes misguided people who think they can be artists by going to school for it, sometimes people who otherwise don't feel like they can express what they want to in any other medium, nor do they want to be confined to being a banker or a designer or to work in marketing etc, also, some trust fund babies etc etc. All types. Stupid question.

I'd also rather be a starving artist that got to experiment with whatever I wanted and create everyday than a stressed out graphic designer who, by nature, now just takes everything too seriously.
- which is what I am. stressed out. tired of the grind.brains
- Sometimes I feel the same way. Then I remember how nice it is to have a car and a house.Glitterati_Duane

Daymmmn girl, that art is fine.

There are people who go into an art career because they have the financial status/backing to do so. There are plenty of "trust fund baby artists," a few have talent and many others don't. Design and art fall into the "anyone" can do it category. Look at Van Gogh, his brother always paid for his paints and living arrangements while he never sold a thing. In Basquiat, Rene says something like "No one wants to be part of a generation that disregards another Van Gogh." To be an artist today really is a luxury, although there have been artists like De Kooning who lived a very thrifty lifestyle, I think that particular formula in the current times is over. NYC used to have tons of cheap rent, drugs, drug money, music scenes, etc Those days are very different from today in my opinion. Especially where artists in San Francisco lived, good luck places here start at about a million!

- again. i don't make a huge living off my art, but I do sell some and i am happy to do it againtheredmasque
- Plus i have met a lot of niche artists who do make a living or supplemented by teachingtheredmasque

But yah if you want to be an artist you just do it... It's a lifestyle and nothing that anyone says should matter.
