Understanding Photography is understanding light and composition. Nikon, Canon and photoshop are just the tools needed to craft the message. We shape our tools and then our tools shape us.

reminds me of countless first year art/photography students

what an incredibly rude and inflated ego must have written that. first of all, it is all pretty much 'captain obvious' what he writes, second of all he starts whining about 'a better IQ' to understand photography.
sounds like a typical game-addict who has taken up photography, read a few books and now thinks he's more l33t then his online gaming friends.
that link was a serious waste of my precious time, to be honest.

If your serious about studying photographic theory you will need to look further than random web posts on the subject. One of my favorite authors is Allen Sekula.

Not much of his work is available online. University libraries usually carry his books.

the best way to understand photography is to go out and shoot with whatever..in most cases here with all you internet gurus, your iphone is fine...a picture is a picture and later on you'll figure out what camera works for you.
but if you want to brush up on some basics:
'the history of photography' beaumont newhall (sp?)
susan sontag- 'on photography'
john berger 'ways of seeing'
the guide- william eggleston
avedon- in the american west
anything by bresson or eugene atgetalso try developing your own black and white film..be your own photoshop.
