  the best way to understand photography is to go out and shoot with whatever..in most cases here with all you internet gurus, your iphone is fine...a picture is a picture and later on you'll figure out what camera works for you.

  but if you want to brush up on some basics:
  'the history of photography' beaumont newhall (sp?)
  susan sontag- 'on photography'
  john berger 'ways of seeing'
  the guide- william eggleston
  avedon- in the american west
  anything by bresson or eugene atget

  also try developing your own black and white film..be your own photoshop.
