Anyone have any good literature or links in regards to corporate naming? Also any advice/process/method for doing this sort of thing would be helpful. First time doing something like this.
Basically i'm part of a team that's involved in the naming - we've done a fair amount of our own brand of research but are just looking to see how other people might approach a similiar task. I mentioned to our project manager that this might not be something to jump the gun on but they're pretty intent on sticking to the (paltry) 20 hr deadline.

From my experience, the one bit of advice I'd offer - "ensure that it's idiot-proof and easy to explain to morons on the 'phone".
It needs to distinct enough to remember but not so distinct as to be hard to recall.
- K, that's two bits of fairly obvious advice - just don't underestimate People's ability to be completely f-ing stupid, is all.Nairn
- no, we have a few things here that say the same thing, unfortunately we don't have any legal to guide or choicesd_rek
- but we have solid backgrounds and explanations for each 'wordtype'... we just want to take them to the next leveld_rek

d-rek... 20hrs? How are you going to be sure it is unique and trademarkable? Damn man, the last thing you want is the naming equivalent of the Quark logo debacle.

Amicus,
Yeah, i've been trying to wrap my head around it... I don't think the project manager here really understood what was involved when he quoted the project. As far as I know it's the first time they've done something like this so like I said.. i think it's been underestimated.
With the project itself I think we have some very good ideas for the name but they need to be taken to the next level... and unfortunately that requires more time. So yeah, I'm just trying to prepare myself for next time(if there is one) and also trying to educate the heads a little.

WOW branding. Company's site with a decent portfolio, quite a few stuff and links to read, and they have published books on naming and branding. I myself got "logo Savvy". There they present projects from around the globe and cover things like strategy, naming, etc...

that's a damn fine name!

The tried and true approach of having a “computer” generate random 3-letter combinations from which you derive a company name. Many companies have done it including “Elf” I can’t remember what they do – something to do with cars, I think.

By the way, has anyone noticed how “naming” threads always seem to disappear? Normally it’s after someone suggests a name like “Piss Face and Partners™” or something.

Come up with a name. Remove a consonant, add an "a" and your done.

If they do not have alot of money for branding then what they company provides needs to be in the name.
