let me help out on this. you should get a bike. Maybe even a bicycle.

why don't you lease a car

It's good to know you're okay, man. Driving is crapshoot. If I was in your position, I'd look around for a good later model Volvo wagon. They're very safe and their engines run forever if you take care of 'em.

~2004 honda civic maybe

I had a nice Jeep Cherokee that I got for about that price. Not sure if you are into the Jeep thing, but the 4L engine they use in those is well-tested.
I also had a motorcycle that I paid a little less than that for which was nice to ride around when i lived in LA. Of course, you stand a good chance of getting killed on one of those.

I would say a Honda, though I have an older (98) diesel jetta that definitely isn't worth more than that and it's a pretty good car. Also it gets insane gas mileage....but so do civics.

Actually forgot about something....
go with a Geo Prism, sure they are not much to look at but they are the exact same car as a Toyota Corolla. Dirt cheap, good gas mileage and reliable. Hell yeah!

Everyone in my family with a Toyota has one running strong with over 200k miles...

every one says the same thing about toyota, honda. etc. still its like apple. even do you bought a new laptop, there was issue with that one.
so, buy a car that you like, and want. and if its pretty its a plus.

Honda's rarely go wrong but when they do, it's generally expensive. But if it has to be old and secondhand I'd go Japanese. But as I'm in Europe I'd consider Fords as well. Not as reliable but cheap as chips if they go wrong.

if you are moving to DC then look into something you can tow a trailer with or even a VW Eurovan for around $7k that you could avoid hotel costs with. Otherwise Subarus last for fuckingever like the Hondas and Toyotas. Don't buy an America car or you will be unhappy.

Where do you live, I've got and old Toyota I'm selling.
