So about a month ago, after saving up, I finally bought my first bike (since being a teenager anyway) to start riding to and from work. I have a car, but it's older and I only ever used it for the occasional weekend out of the city. Last Friday I discover the car had been stolen. Not too broken hearted about it just feeling a bit violated. Today I go out for lunch and I discover my bike has been stolen. The seat and the wheels both had anti-theft devices on them and I had a U-lock on it....What the fuck! Oh yeah and Monday is my birthday. Happy Birthday to me.
Honestly, I'm much more broken up about the bike. Anyone want to offer some sympathy or advice about preventing my next bike from being stolen? My building doesn't allow bikes inside. I'd appreciate it.

you're me like 3 months ago.

saw one of these the other day. there are a lot of bikes that fold up to make them easier to carry/store.

were you parking in the same place?

Yeah, just need to vent about it too I guess. I know it happens in this city all the time (new york).
I've tried bringing the bike inside before. I work in a building with a lot of other businesses in it. I was caught by security and a building wide email went out that bringing bikes in is not allowed.

From my recent theft experience the only advice I can give is to buy a shitty bike to ride into work on. Anything nice will get stolen, even shitty bikes run the risk of getting swiped but you're less likely to have that happen. My current bike that I ride to work on is worth about $40, I have about $80 in locks on it.
The more locks the better, i'm surprised someone went to the effort if you had that many on your bike it must have been a nice one.
Did you at least record the serial number (for whatever good that might do)?

It was a low end Specialized bike so it wasn't anything crazy, but yeah a shitty bike sounds like a better idea. Stuff like this is just so disilusioning and makes me want to move to Iowa.
I'm filing a claim with Kryptonite locks so hopefully I'll get some money back for it.

Those U-Locks are notoriously unsafe, dude.

That sucks! Try getting a used bike next time around. Those shiny new bikes are obvious targets. You never want your bike to be the best one on the rack.
And get a good lock too. If I lived in NYC I would go for a U-lock + a cable lock. May this one: http://www.kryptonitelock.com/Pr…
Oh and happy birthday.

Thanks.
That's the lock I had. :o(

yeah, my friends bike was stolen, and then one evening he sees a dude with his bike, so instead of confronting him he jsut follows him, at some point he goes into the store without locking hsi bike, so my friend BANG! and steals his own bike. About 2 blocks away he realizes that... shit that isn't my bike. BUt what could he do other then keep it...

for your next bike make a sign that says "I rubbed my herpes all over this bike"

tell the apartment you are a courier and need it for your job and they keep getting ripped off. kinda like if you were blind and needed a seeing eye dog. they can fuck right off. happy birthday.
