Egyptian leaders vow to restore order after attack on Israeli Embassy

http://edition.cnn.com/2011/WORL…Cairo (CNN) -- Egypt's military leaders on Saturday promised to re-establish order, a day after an attack on the Israeli Embassy heightened tensions in Egypt and Israel.
Officials reactivated the country's emergency law, according to Mohamed Hegazy, spokesman for the prime minister. The move makes it easier for authorities to arrest people and requires protesters to seek permission to demonstrate, according to a senior official in the National Security Directorate, who spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity.
The law was revived to "protect the peace and national security of the country," the official said.The government also vowed to try those responsible for the attack on the Israeli Embassy, which pushed Israel to withdraw its diplomatic personnel from Egypt, Hegazy said.
Egyptian Prime Minister Essam Sharaf offered to step down in the wake of the violence, but his resignation was refused, according to a government source not authorized to talk to the media about the matter.

In the interviews, she also called civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. "terrible," "tricky" and "a phony.""This book shows Jackie Kennedy unplugged," historian and CBS News analyst Douglas Brinkley told "Early Show" co-anchor Erica Hill Monday.
She called him "tricky" and a "phony" after hearing about FBI tapes of him and a woman in his hotel room, while noting that JFK had urged her not to be judgmental. (JFK's own adulterous affairs weren't yet widely known.)
She said King had mocked her husband's funeral and Cardinal Richard Cushing, who celebrated Mass at the funeral.
"He made fun of Cardinal Cushing and said that he was drunk at it," she said. "And things about they almost dropped the coffin. I just can't see a picture of Martin Luther King without thinking, you know, that man's terrible."

Vice President Al Gore won it with 67 percent of the vote in 2000, and Barack Obama carried it by 11 percentage points eight years later. It has been held by a string of high-profile Democrats — including Sen. Chuck Schumer (N.Y.) — for decades.
And yet, the special election set for Tuesday in the Brooklyn and Queens areas between state Assemblyman David Weprin (D) and businessman Bob Turner (R) — a race occasioned by the scandal and subsequent resignation of Rep. Anthony Weiner (D) — is surprisingly close, the result, many observers suggest, of the toxic national political environment and Obama’s low poll ratings.
“Obama wins no popularity contests here,” said Hank Sheinkopf, a Democratic consultant in New York.
In a Siena College poll released late last week, Turner held a six-point edge over Weprin. Obama’s approval rating stood at 43 percent, with 54 percent disapproving.
Republicans — and even some Democrats — are painting the race as an Obama referendum. Ed Koch, a Democratic former mayor of New York, endorsed Turner and likened the impact of his possible victory to that of Republican Scott Brown in 2010 in the special Senate election in Massachusetts. A vote for Turner, Koch said, would “register a protest against the positions of President Obama and the Republican leadership on a number of key issues.”
