American Way: Barack Obama, cult figure of 2008, left behind by new anti-spending zeitgeist

    http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/new…

Something momentous is happening in the United States right now and Barack Obama doesn’t get it. In Madison, Wisconsin last week, up to 40,000 public employees, organised by their unions, the Democratic party and the grassroots Organizing for America group that elected the president in 2008, gathered at the state capitol. Teachers left their classrooms, forcing schools to close.

Their objective? To rail against an attempt to balance the budget and curtail union power by newly-elected Governor Scott Walker, a Republican. The Democratic party’s response? Its state senators have fled Wisconsin to Illinois, dodging state troopers as they went, in order to prevent the budget being voted on. Obama branded Walker’s actions as an “assault on unions”.

It was Obama who crowed just after he entered the White House that “elections have consequences”. In Wisconsin last November, the consequences included the governorship, a Senate seat and the state senate and assembly all being lost by the Democrats.

    Hey Chilamont,
David Wu represents my district. I have met him numerous times and have voted for him every election. He's a nice guy and I'm proud of the work he's done. Last October he said he was having a stressful time.. re election campaign and family issues are undoubtedly stressful situations and he still won the election and sought counseling.
The most embarrassing thing he did was send staffers a picture of him in a Halloween costume. It was pretty tame for a person that represents a city with the motto "Keep Portland Weird"

"I think a take-home lesson from this is while they were very, very unprofessional, you shouldn't ever send photographs of yourself in a Halloween costume, something you intend to wear to a private party a couple of nights later," Wu said Tuesday. "It's just not professional, even when you're joshing around with your kids a couple of nights before Halloween. I did send those photographs. It was unprofessional; inappropriate."

It's not like he took a picture of his half naked body and sent it to some stranger looking for sex on the internet.

    • and why are you always the first and only person to respond to your dumb post?fooler

Vermont Governor proposes single payer health care

    http://www.npr.org/2011/02/11/13…

Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin, who was elected last November after promising to reform health care in the state, unveiled a bill Tuesday that would abolish most forms of private health insurance and move state residents into a publicly funded insurance pool.

Under Shumlin's "single-payer" system, Vermont residents would receive health benefits paid for by the state, regardless of their employment status or income. The plan is designed to help stem rising health costs, which state officials say have become unsustainable.

Ex-aide's book paints harsh portrait of Sarah Palin

    http://www.politico.com/news/sto…

The still-unpublished manuscript, obtained by POLITICO, reveals Palin, as a candidate for governor, penning letters-to-the-editor in praise of herself, to be sent under other names. It blames the candidate for inflaming, rather than ignoring, scurrilous rumors. And it quotes her pledging to avoid appearing on any network other than Fox News, referring to the rest as “the bad guys.”
    ...

The best line of the whole thing:

In the months before she resigned the governorship, when her poll numbers began to slip, Palin’s advisers sought to bolster her spirits by making the unsubstantiated case that she was being targeted by the Obama White House and Democratic National Committee.

Palin seemed to believe the same thing, but conceded there was no evidence.

“We have no smoking gun that proves we’re being targeted by the bad guys, so it probably sounds to many like I’m a whining b#*(h who stubbornly refuses to govern in the public’s best interest,” she wrote in an email to some of her closest advisers, according to Bailey.

Allen West Confronted by Koran-Wielding CAIR Executive

    http://shark-tank.net/2011/02/21…

At a townhall meeting hosted by Congressman Allen West on Monday evening in Pompano Beach, the Q&A segment of the meeting featured a Koran wielding Nezar Hamze, Executive Director of the Council for American Islamic Relations (CAIR). Hamze confronted Congressman West and asked him to point out where in the Koran does it give marching orders to Muslims “to carry out attacks against Americans and innocent people”. West quickly pointed out that the Koran was written long before America even existed and that it does indeed tell believers to kill infidels, and then proceeded to chronicle a lengthy list of historical Muslim acts of aggression. Congressman West closed his retort by referencing the Fort Hood shootings and 9-11 attacks, saying that his first hand experiences on the battlefield has given him insight into the tactics that Islamists use before telling Hamze not to “try to blow sunshine up my butt” with his criticism of him. West took offense to Hamze’s amateurish criticism of his stance on radical Islam and concluded by telling Mr. Hamze to “put the microphone down and go home.”

    • CAIR, you just got served!! More of this please!!

Two-Thirds of Wisconsin Public-School 8th Graders Can’t Read Proficiently—Despite Highest Per Pupil Spending in Midwest

    http://cnsnews.com/news/article/…

Two-thirds of the eighth graders in Wisconsin public schools cannot read proficiently according to the U.S. Department of Education, despite the fact that Wisconsin spends more per pupil in its public schools than any other state in the Midwest.

So, dirtbags, your conservative news site is (SHOCKINGLY) cherry-picking information to back up the positions of it's favorite party.
Fact is that the highest percentage of "proficient" 8th grade readers in the nation is in Connecticut which boasts a 38% procifiency rate (only 6% points away from bad ol' WI). This does not count the 5% advanced readers in that state, much like the Wisconsin statistic neglects the 2% of advanced readers. Also left out of your little dog & pony show is the 44% of WI 8th graders who are at a basic reading level.
Now, what is a basic reading level? It means that they "should demonstrate an understanding of the overall meaning of what they read". Which is funny, because from the way you assholes and your "news" sources frame it, it sounds like only 32% of WI 8th graders are literate. "Proficient", according to the NAEP, means that the students understand and can communicate inferential as well as literal information from the texts that they read. Gleaning the inferred information is the ONLY difference in the two categories.
Which means that only 22% of WI students are below the basic reading level, which, granted, isn't great. But 23 other states have higher percentages of non-basic level readers, including conservative haven, Texas, which has a 27% non-basic reader percentage.

Now, i will absolutely concede that unions have moved away from the intent of their original inception and have been corrupted by the power that they wield, like any other person or group that has power. But regardless of the intentions of the unions, to take away the ability to effectively negotiate reasonable salaries and benefits for teachers will not improve these assessment scores. By your own damn capitalist philosophies, taking away the carrot will take away the motivation. Most of these teachers teach because they want to. It's often a thankless job. Giving the good ones less reasons to be a teacher is not what you want to do if you want academic improvement.

In listening to all the righty talk shows this and last week I've heard the statistic that about '1/3 of all Wisconsin public school teachers send their children to PRIVATE schools'... ... I have yet to read it in one news story or find it anywhere in an article / story even closely related to a reputable News / Media outlet...

... where the hell do some of these righty twits get their info? I admit I was a little fired up when I first heard the statistic... ... but l wanted to read it... verify it... so I can jam in your faces here (kidding!!) :)...

... but nope... the statistic doesn't exist... check the google search: http://www.google.com/search?q=1…

I see private forums and religious forums spewing that nonsense... but nothing siting any real sources...

I heard Limbaugh say it more than once and I heard it on a local show this morning...

... if it's true - then the teachers who do it can goto hell. If they think they're worth all this much more money but won't send their own kids to be educated in the system that they're a part of... well... fuck them.... ... of course that's IF... IF this statistic is true.

    • umm.. they make shit up like chilamont does every single day

    Dems AWOL in Indiana

    http://www.foxnews.com/politics/…

With Democrats fleeing Indiana to avoid voting on an anti-union bill in the latest fight over union rights in a Midwest state, Republican leaders were divided on whether to keep the so-called right-to-work legislation alive.

The bill, which would prohibit union representation fees from being a condition of employment, is under a Tuesday procedural deadline for consideration.

Only three of the 40 House Democrats were in the chamber when Republican Speaker Brian Bosma tried to begin Tuesday's session, leaving it with too few members for a quorum. At the same time, hundreds of union members crowded the adjourning hallways in protest of the contentious labor bill.
