"Facing a national political firestorm and criticism from local allies, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell apologized Wednesday night for not including any reference to slavery in a proclamation he issued last week honoring Confederate History Month."
Well, so much for your national ambitions there, Ronald McDonnell.
It really is amazing how racist certain people still are in this country, and especially in the South.

- You know the civil war wasn't about slavery right? I wouldn't expect you to read history or anything.********
- yeah, the slavery issue was kinda tacked on the end to get support. i was surprised about this when i did some reading.airey
- Not true guys, sorry. No one said slavery was the ONLY issue, but it was there right at the beginning. Read a history book.ukit
- UNCLE FREDDIE NOT DEAD?utopian
- Ukit, you're mistaken. It was part of the reason, but not a major part of it. I know this is what you learned in history classmathinc
- but you also learned that pilgrims had dinner parties with the native americans.mathinc

"Black Republicans find themselves always having to prove who they are. Because the assumption is the Republican Party is for whites and the Democratic Party is for blacks," he said.

^ Hey I am glad they were able to find the three black tea partiers that exist and interview them.
As for the Civil War, this is what the Vice President of the Confederacy had to say about what caused it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cor…
"The new constitution has put at rest, forever, all the agitating questions relating to our peculiar institution — African slavery as it exists amongst us — the proper status of the negro in our form of civilization. This was the immediate cause of the late rupture and present revolution. Jefferson in his forecast, had anticipated this, as the "rock upon which the old Union would split." He was right. What was conjecture with him, is now a realized fact. But whether he fully comprehended the great truth upon which that rock stood and stands, may be doubted.
(Jefferson's) ideas, however, were fundamentally wrong. They rested upon the assumption of the equality of races. This was an error. ... Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner–stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery — subordination to the superior race — is his natural and normal condition."

Baltasar Garzón, the Spanish judge who attained international fame for pursuing leaders like Augusto Pinochet of Chile and Silvio Berlusconi of Italy, was himself indicted Wednesday on charges of abusing his powers to investigate Spanish Civil War atrocities.
The charges against Mr. Garzón mark an extraordinary reversal for a prosecutor who has also spearheaded Spain’s fight against political corruption and terrorism perpetrated by ETA, the militant Basque separatist group.
Mr. Garzón was indicted Wednesday by a fellow judge, Luciano Varela, on charges of overreaching his authority in October 2008, when he launched a politically sensitive investigation into tens of thousands of deaths and disappearances during Spain’s Civil War and the ensuing dictatorship of Francisco Franco.

if anything, this is a wake up that taxation in the us needs to be reexamined: http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Ne…
- Why? Middle class families making less than 50k per household need help.Mimio
- almost 50% of the us is not paying income taxes? is that fair for the other 53% that are?johndiggity
- Maybe what's not fair is that those families aren't able to earn more?Mimio
- Or are they lazy deadbeats?Mimio
- what are you suggesting? what laws are in place stopping them from earning more?johndiggity
- all i'm saying is that a system that fails almost 50% of its citizens is a pretty shitty system.johndiggity
- ukit0
On the other hand, consider the fact that many of the biggest U.S. corps pay virtually no tax either!!
http://mediamattersaction.org/bl…
No wonder we are going broke - no one pays any f*cking taxes.

"The most egregious example is General Electric ( GE - news - people ). Last year the conglomerate generated $10.3 billion in pretax income, but ended up owing nothing to Uncle Sam. In fact, it recorded a tax benefit of $1.1 billion."

they should abolish all taxes and just have a vat or consumption tax. the more you consume, the more taxes you pay. pretty simple. everyone pays their fair share.
- They should abolish taxes and then re-establish other taxes?Mimio
- People and corporations will find a way to dodge their responsibilities under this system too.Mimio
- how are you dodging state and local sales taxes now (if you have them?).johndiggity
- ukit0
Now you're just being silly. A VAT is never gonna replace all the money from income, corp and property taxes.
There seem to be two contradictory messages from "fiscal conservatives." One is, the deficit is out of control - I agree with that BTW, you'd be crazy not to. But then the second is this strange idea that we need to eliminate most taxes altogether, or that any kind of progressive tax code (used by nearly every country in the world) is somehow morally wrong.
The problem is that it's almost impossible to square those two points of view. You can solve the deficit issue by raising taxes just by a little bit, but there's no way in hell you can pay down the deficit, while simultaneously cutting taxes a huge amount. So let's be realistic here.
- Yes, the wealthy don't spend most or all of their income on consumption, like the poor do.Josev

^^I like the sound of that johndiggity... but imagine how much money all those single moms (whom a load of them are in that position for not keeping their legs shut) will have to pay given the fact that her children require school, food, health care etc etc...
... and that's just using a single mom example... there are plenty of other examples in which folks would cry foul or racist or anti-woman... or anti something else... if you tried and hold them ACCOUNTABLE for their consumption / actions...
... in the end - anyone agreeing w/your idea of consumption tax would be considered heartless as the previously 'entitled' folks will be up shit's creek in having to live responsibly for once.
- Too bad these Welfare Mommas don't have enough dough do buy a PAC and influence our legislators to favor them.Mimio
- ...favor them.Mimio
- too bad they didn't keep their legs from the start... it's so nice of them to live off the rest of usPonyBoy
- *legs closedPonyBoy
- Honestly you're painting a picture that hasn't existed since 1996.Mimio
- This nation grants $160+ billion a year in corporate subsidies. Be pissed about that.Mimio
- how many single mommies do you know?... cuz I know a few who scrape cash off the gov... not sure what country you're inPonyBoy
- http://en.wikipedia.…Mimio
- and what of those little marks that you make for each child on your taxes (lil bundles of tax break joy)PonyBoy
- welfare hasn't ended... it's just been masked / hidden amongst new entitlements / credits over timePonyBoy
- How do you guys think polygamist mormon families survive without much real income? Welfare.mathinc
- Since single mothers get more money .. and in a polygamist family there are legally quite a few 'single' mothers..mathinc
