Lack of belief in God means you have faith in people. I'd much prefer not to believe that people are inherently evil or sinners.
- why do you assume if you have faith in God therefore you have no faith in people?eieio
- God also forgives everyone in their totality according the Christianityeieio
- Still, isn't a central tenant of Christianity that people are born sinners and must redeem themselves?ukit
- Don't pretend that's not the caseukit

according to Muhammad Allah willed man-kind to understand reality through logic and science. That's a complete unity between the interpretation of God's devine influence and rational modern thought and it comes straight out of 7th C. Saudi Arabia... go figure.

Yeah, fair point, life is complicated right? But where do you get off saying most people are not literal about religion? For several thousand years...scratch that, all of human existence...people have taken religion literally...Galileo was thrown in prison for suggesting that the Earth rotated around the sun. Less than a century ago the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that evolution couldn't be taught in schools. Up until Obama became prez the U.S. refused to do stem cell experiments.
I don't think anyone's being "close minded" by critiquing religion from that point of view. A non-literal interpretation of religion is an extremely recent development, almost a historical footnote, it's like saying Kayne West represents all of rap music.
- I never said people ARN't literal about religion, I said I'M NOT and so are plenty otherseieio
- And BTW, it's a move away from religion, not towards itukit
- Well, you were giving us shit for criticizing the rib statement on that groundsukit
- non literal speaking in religion especially Christianty certainly SIN't a new thing.eieio
- Jeus speaks non literally constantly in the New Testament and says so specificallyeieio
- ORLY? Examples plsukit
- He has to re-explain all his non-literal speaking to his disciples because it confuses everyoneeieio
- What I'm wondering is, did people for the first 1,900 years post Jesus believe in literalism or not?ukit
- And where does it say that the Old Testament isn't literal?ukit
- I mean what, was Noah's Ark just a really complicated metaphor?ukit
- some thought literal some didn't, its a complicated issue no doubteieio

Ukit an example of non literal speaking....In Matthew 16:6 Jesus says to the disciples: "Watch out, and beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and Sadducees." Many of us are at a loss as to what Jesus meant. Don’t worry so were the disciples. Mark then tells us: And they said among themselves, 'It is because we have not brought any bread.' Jesus seems to be frustrated with their lack of understanding so he says: 'You have so little faith, why are you talking among yourselves about having no bread? Do you still not understand?
He then explains that 'yeast' does not mean bread it means the 'teachings' of the Pharisees and Sadducees because they were all spoiled aristocrats and stuff. NON-literal constantly like in the new testament and its not a stretch to subsequently understand the other stories and messages as similar
