i only say that because of the y2k like fear that engulfed the blog thread early on wondering if it would lock at 10,000, then the anti-climactic result of it continuing to grow. i wanted to instill some fox news fear™ into the countdown to 10,000 (not unlike the impending doom that is 2012)

The lost decade for the economy
The U.S. economy has expanded at a healthy clip for most of the last 70 years, but by a wide range of measures, it stagnated in the first decade of the new millennium. Job growth was essentially zero, as modest job creation from 2003 to 2007 wasn't enough to make up for two recessions in the decade. Rises in the nation's economic output, as measured by gross domestic product, was weak. And household net worth, when adjusted for inflation, fell as stock prices stagnated, home prices declined in the second half of the decade and consumer debt skyrocketed.

The recent retirements of two veteran Democratic senators and the decision by two Democratic gubernatorial candidates to drop their bids could prompt more in the party to head for the exits and further frighten already skittish donors and activists. But it doesn’t yet appear that the party’s congressional majorities are threatened.
Republicans are poised to make major gains in the House and the Senate, but the number of seats necessary to reclaim the majority makes it unlikely that they could knock the Democrats out of power in either chamber.
To win the control of the House, Republicans must win 40 seats in November. And to reclaim the Senate, they must pick up 11 seats. The math is harder than it looks.
