Breaking story from AP...
"New Dem health plan has public option, lower cost"
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090…
Democrats on a key Senate Committee outlined a revised and far less costly health care plan Wednesday night that includes a government-run insurance option and an annual fee on employers who do not offer coverage to their workers.
The plan carries a 10-year price tag of slightly over $600 billion, and would lead toward an estimated 97 percent of all Americans having coverage, according to the Congressional Budget Office, Sens. Edward M. Kennedy and Chris Dodd said in a letter to other members of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. The AP obtained a copy.
By contrast, an earlier, incomplete proposal carried a price tag of roughly $1 trillion and would have left millions uninsured, CBO analysts said in mid-June.
The letter indicated the cost and coverage improvements resulted from two changes. The first calls for a government-run health insurance option to compete with private coverage plans, an option that has drawn intense opposition from Republicans.
"We must not settle for legislation that merely gestures at reform," the two Democrats wrote. "We must deliver on the promise of true change."- Whatever. Geez, $600 billion is allot better that 1 Trillion, NOT. You idiots just don't get it, do you?********
- Anything to 'sell' it to you sheeple. Funny how the price tag on this keeps getting smaller....tommyo

Wasn't sure how to read the tea leaves in the whole Honduras mess, although I was guessing it was more of a oligarch coup than anything to do with democracy-at-work, they're new "coup congress" just issued some new "emergency" laws which stripped Hondurans of the following rights from the country's constitution:
1. The right to protest.
2. Freedom in one's home from unwarranted search, seizure and arrest.
3. Freedom of association.
4. Guarantees of rights of due process while under arrest.
5. Freedom of transit in the country.Uh huh. Have the military take out the poor peoples populist president and install your own guys. Oligarch Coup 101. Not saying the guy disposed was all peaches and honey, but this is not democracy in action folks.

I used to think legalizing pot was a good idea, but after doing some research I changed my view. Read up on the countries where pot is legal, and what the effect is....pretty interesting. Something to remember is that weed CAN still cause some major health issues for people who smoke it, though it may pale in comparison to other harder drugs.
I don't think police should enforce busting kids with small amounts of weed or really enforcing the laws against pot much, but I don't think it should be legal either. In Colorado, I already notice that cops don't seem to really care about it anymore.
- mmm k...I'd love to see the research connecting a countries problems directly to legal herblazerbass
- Alcohol can also cause major health issuesJosev
- Yes, .I'd love to see the research connecting a country's problems directly to legal herb too.********

Yeah, I don't smoke pot personally, or gamble, or hire prostitutes, but, if it's gonna happen...why not regulate/ tax it?
I don't see how life would be all that different except that you would have millions of people not locked up in prison wasting government money, you would put some criminal groups out of existence.
- I don't either....I guess the argument would be these things could be detrimental to society.designbot

"Point is, Bush used to not be a pansy and look where that got us."
I am so tired of responses such as the eloquent DrBombay's above. You Ds continue to use the same Bush bashing rhetoric and its just plain appalling.
Look where Bush got us? Well then, o.k., I encourage you to post your short list (good or bad) right here, right now so that we can begin the debate.
Then, let's compare where "Bush got us" (in eight years mind you), with where Obama has taken us in just 6 short months.
This way, we can move forward, and likely in the context that this IS Obama's presidency now, and that HE shall take full responsibility for the decisions that he is making.
Sound cool? Fair? Then let the fun begin.

Just watched a fascinating interview with Lynn Tilton. She basically sad that the TARP is a total failure thus far and that the economy is nowhere near feeling the kind of hurt that lurks ahead.
But wait, yesterday Obama proclaimed "mission accomplished" concerning the bailout (LIAR).
I believe Ms. Tilton, and as the American people begin to wise-up, which they most certainly are, Obama and the rest of those crooks won't have anywhere to hide.

One of the Republican leaders in the Senate sides with the military leaders in the Honduras coup...
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) has come out in support of the military coup in Honduras, chastising President Obama in a statement for what he calls "a slap in the face to the people" of that country.

"Senate bill fines people refusing health coverage
WASHINGTON (AP) -- Americans who refuse to buy affordable medical coverage could be hit with fines of more than $1,000 under a health care overhaul bill unveiled Thursday by key Senate Democrats looking to fulfill President Barack Obama's top domestic priority.
The Congressional Budget Office estimated the fines will raise around $36 billion over 10 years. Senate aides said the penalties would be modeled on the approach taken by Massachusetts, which now imposes a fine of about $1,000 a year on individuals who refuse to get coverage. Under the federal legislation, families would pay higher penalties than individuals.
In a revamped health care system envisioned by lawmakers, people would be required to carry health insurance just like motorists must get auto coverage now. The government would provide subsidies for the poor and many middle-class families, but those who still refuse to sign up would face penalties....'
