Anyone else think that GetRefresh' spiel is a bit reminiscent of a certain guy that used to frequent these parts? Some of the similarities in personal story, writing style etc are uncanny.

    • Wow! DrBombayCompany has something new to say. Amazing! Congratulations!!!

^ Is defense spending important? YES. It is worth noting that our military has saved millions of lives and preserved nations all around the world, including our own, beginning with the Revolutionary war.

War is horrible. We have NOT been perfect. But unfortunately, war is sometimes necessary.

These small government Conservatives just don't get it. Face the facts, we're a huge nation, we have the globe's reserve currency, we have the world's biggest military (which has been used three times in the last 20 years by Conservative administrations at the urging of Conservative pundits - the same Conservative pundits continue to saber rattle agasint Iran). To sit there and say "Well, I want a small government" is just fantasy. Not going to happen. You're cherry-picking facts and then closing your eyes in tight and running around in little circles shouting "I can't hear you! Small taxes! Small Government!! La La La!"

Instead of dealing with the facts as they are and saying "Well, look, our principles reflect a belief in smaller, EFFECTIVE government within the current context, and we seek to do things to that end" they just want to click they're Ruby slippers together and go back to Mythical Small Town USA. Not going to happen.

It's like physics. You know, they're are aerodynamics and engineering for sub-sonic speed aircraft, and for those that fly at supersonic speeds. Both are true, but you try applying the physics toolset for sub-sonics on a supersonic plane and it will crash, and spectacularly.

If you roll back history to say, 1850 or maybe 1910 you can try out all these small government shit you want, but you know what? The Great Depression happened. World War II happened. Vietnam happened. The 70's Oil Shock happened. 9/11 Happened. the Iraq War II happened. All this shit fundamentally changed this country for arguably better or worse. But you can't just spout shit like "I ask nothing from my government with exception to keeping our country safe." and expect that to make sense contextually.

Safe? Safe from what? Safe for who? Where does that begin? Where does that stop? Huh?

Right now, the United States was the economic engine driving the entire planet. It has crashed. The entire planet is going through incredible economic pain, the political fallout is about to come down the pike. You're going to see massive social unrest across the planet, and I gaurantee that none of it will help make America "safe". And the conservatives Idea? "Cut taxes!" Ok, what else do you have in your idea bag there? "Make government smaller!" OK, great. How does that address the issue of global system of private enterprise and capital falling flat on it's face? That might be great suggestion in 1850 America, but doesn't map the reality of 2009.

Oh right. let's call Obama the Messiah, that'll help things out.

From a pretty centrist position over here... it's comical watching you guys get personal and bash on GetRefresh for saying no less idiotic comments than a large percentage of the participants in this thread ... Is it just that his rhetoric doesn't like to party with your rhetoric? Your rhetorics don't like the same music? It always comes down to a pissing match of wit and opinion while politicians representing both sides of popular positions drive us off a cliff. Isn't it pretty safe to say at this point that no one has this thing figured out?

    • we never will either

^^ morilla, and others, for the record, I was and am extremely distressed and saddened concerning the events that led us into the war in Iraq. Yes, the truth can and does hurt. And sometimes, perhaps it's best that we don't learn of the truth. But not in this case.

I am also still very saddened and angry concerning the attack of 9/11. And despite the notion that our foreign policy had much, if not everything to do with provoking the attack, I do not believe that America should ever stand-down, following such an event.

But ultimately, these statements contradict themselves and are somewhat irresolvable. In the end, war and defense result from, and become, a perpetual "eye, for an eye, for an eye"— which finally suggest that one defends themselves, or becomes conquered.

So, to all those that oppose war, so be it. However, America would not be the country that she is without having possessed, in just 300 short years, the most powerful military forces on earth.

I didn't even bother watching the vid. Point is, you get into heated arguments with people, mainly me. Then you criticize other people for doing the exact same thing. You are so above it all, yet you come back every day.

  • tommyo0

Sorry Rick but you can't allow anyone to have a different opinion and quite frankly you're immature about politics in general. Anyone who comes in here with a view different from yours is the subject of inflammatory attacks and nitpicking, watch the video, it might do you well. Yes, I get into heated arguments too, which is pretty natural on here. But the sense I get with you, and no one else on here, is that you take it personally and feel some twisted sense of duty to attack, demean and try to get them to stop coming into 'your' world (a politics thread on a graphic design forum). I really could care less, I try to ignore you, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. I take the bait generally, but like the dog in the video, it's a little hard to ignore you most of the time. So in effect, it's my problem for even paying attention to you. I'll take the blame for our heated, yet passionate, relationship. But if you feel so inclined to do your best to grow the fuck up and realize that it's okay for people to disagree with the facts you know to be true. It doesn't always call for insults and personal egos. Follow TBO's lead or something. I'm going to try my best to do the same.

  • DrBombay0

I disagree, there is not 2 equal sides to every argument. It is childish to think that there is. Greed is not a valid argument, as an example.

    • Uh oh, the good Dr is also a religious zealot? What say you, DrB. Are you greedy, or not?
      ********
  • tommyo0

What's childish is to not appreciate the fact that there are actually many valid sides, and to hold yours so resolute that they are the only right opinion.

    • ... yes, MANY valid sides (the crowd roars!!!).
