How the hell would you even be able to characterize the guy as a neocon then? He's been producing fodder for the angry liberals for the past 8 years. Talking about, 'Bush orchestrated 911' and 'A plane didn't hit the Pentagon it was a missile.'

Am I misreading what you wrote? Dunno...I can't stand Alex Jones so I can see how you'd feel udder rage just listening to him.

    • I don't recall any prominent liberal ever going on about this conspiracy, I've heard loads of crackpot neocons suggest it tho.threadpost

it wasn't pointed at him directly, just the message and onslaught of people who are piling on and wanting him to fail.

    • and I tend to throw "neo-con" around loosely sometimes when I'm pissed.

You know, for me...look, everythign in the media is going to have a bias of some type. We're all savvy modern internet people here, we know this. The best we can hope for is

But then their is bias and then their is misinformation. I can find lots of lefty biased sites, but at the end of the day they don't seem prone to misinformation (on purpose) but rather . Yet the signature of the Rightwing/NeoCons is actual misinformation as a technique. It's an old old use of rhetorical argument - one that Plato/Socrates argued against.

While, for the most part, the left is willing to argue facts, and even with a bias, it's a side that in recent years at least has existed in reality.

The Right in this country just seems intent on ignoring anything fact based. Heck, Bush took the entire country to war on the basis of a lie. And then piled lie and lie ontop of that, and then pooh poohed anyone that presented any facts otherwise.

If we are arguing about what a fact means, we're having a debate. If we argue about what the facts are then someone is using rhetoric to muddy the waters - see creationism/global warming, etc.The entire Think Tank Propaganda industry exists to pump out useless, self-referential, tarted up information to muddy the waters and dilute the facts around debates in issues where big money has interests.

for some reason, thinking the left is existing in reality while the right is off the deep end is very funny to me. to each his own i guess, but typical.

  • TheBlueOne0

Let me clarify, I think the center left is fairly reality based.. The fringe far left is bonkers - but the fringe left doesn't have a major media outlet - existing mostly on websites and in print. Yet FOX news regularly entertains fringe right stories to every living room in america.

  • TheBlueOne0

I see no serious discussion of socialism, union issues, environmental issues, etc. in mainstream media, especially on the TV, cable or broadcast.

In the United States the idea of Free Market /Consumerist Uber Alles is the de facto viewpoint, and anything that presents an alternate view just simply does not exist for mainstream media. It is the very water that the fish who swim in do not see. Now I'm not saying that free market capitalism is per se bad, I'm just saying that other outlooks aren't even entertained. In fact, the only place they are is on FOX, Rush Limbaugh, etc - and then only to be used as a strawman as to "how kooky and moonbatty are these lefty guys"...

  • lowimpakt0

    ^^

"Think about the strangeness of today's situation. Thirty, forty years ago, we were still debating about what the future will be: communist, fascist, capitalist, whatever. Today, nobody even debates these issues. We all silently accept global capitalism is here to stay. On the other hand, we are obsessed with cosmic catastrophes: the whole life on earth disintegrating, because of some virus, because of an asteroid hitting the earth, and so on. So the paradox is, that it's much easier to imagine the end of all life on earth than a much more modest radical change in capitalism.

Here's an example of how the Right Think Tank Machine works.

First, let em ask you all a question - And answer this question honestly - was Iraq truly a victory? If so, or not, by what metrics? Do you think their are forces at work in Iraq - social, tribal, etc. that will eventually tear the place apart whether US troops are their or not?

(My answer - Iraq was a "victory" only so far as it ousted Saddam Hussein. As far as "bringing peace, democracy and stability" to it I would say it was a general and complete failure. This leaves alone the entire question of the justifications/costs of the war in the first place. The very fact there was no true stated metric of victory other than "bringing them freedom". I believe, and I think the facts support, the internal fault lines of the country that have been barely held together by the threat of violence from the US forces - but this does not make for a stable society.)

Now, check how the Right spin this here:

    http://www.weeklystandard.com/we…

It argues that Obama has "inherited victory" in Iraq and that victory is his to lose, and is in turn Bush's crowning achievment.

Seriously. "Inherited victory"? Is that an accurate mapping of reality? Or is saying Obama has inherited a patchwork and tenuous lull in violence in an unstable situation more closer to the facts? Would anyone in their right mind call what the US military achieved in Iraq a "victory" taken in toto - other than their stellar performance in the early stages of the war based on pure military metrics?

But this is the moment for which conservatives have been preparing for the last year and a half: sustaining the illusion of "victory" just long enough to be able to blame Democrats for "losing Iraq" when things go wrong.

Once again the Right don't argue what the facts on the ground actually are, but rather get into a pissing context over parsing "victory" when their very own flag carriers could never in concrete terms say what a victory in Iraq would actually mean outside of vague generalities.

  • TheBlueOne0

Sorry, one more example. Here is Rush Limbaugh today on the Hannity show, re: Obama:

"Look, he's my president. The fact that he is historic is irrelevant to me now. That matters not at all. If he is going to enact a far-left agenda -- look, I think it's already decided. Two trillion dollars in stimulus. The growth of government."

OK, first - where are the facts? He uses the term "far-left" like it's a given what that means. Truth is the far-left can't even get a seat at the table in America. Doesn't exist as a viable political force - especially compared to say Europe or Latin America. In fact by calling someone especially centrist as Obama "far-left" it skewes the entire conversation. It frames it in absolute utter bullshit.

One could go further and state the actual facts that the largest growth of government JUST occured under a conservative administration. Ditto for the $2 trillion dollar stimulus program. An administration that Rush championed.

It's just utter bullshit and isn't based in facts at all.
