anyone going to photokina?

I'd be worried that the higher pixel count would erase the IQ advantage of FF... leading to heavier software noise suppression, leading to fake plastic canon look

Man there are alot of these threads.. we should make a chart.. but to me it still seems like half of the really advanced features will never be used anyway.. both cameras are like the Ferrari 430 v. Porsche GT3 argument.. one may be a tenth faster to 60, and may have slightly better cornering, braking ect, but only 1/100th of the owners will ever get to really use all the car has to offer..
We have both Canon and Nikon here, and its really personal preference past their base level cams, they both do pretty much everything you'll ever need, its just a matter of which one you like better..

I bought a D80 1 1/2 month ago and now there is the D90 out. Damn it. But I'd love to have the D300, but as an amateur it's just to much money.
Next time.

D700 worth it over D300?
- only you can answer this... only do it if VERY low light is important to you********

The 700 is full frame, so if you have the lenses, then ya its worth it.. but if you bought non-full frame lenses, then the 300 is a better choice.. unless you have the $ to get new lenses....
The D80 does all the same stuff, plus will save you a bit.. I have a D300 (and had a 100 and 200 before..) and it gets the job done..
- I have ff lenses, but like the d300 for added reach********
- but would love the high iso of d700 on occasion********
- I ended up just getting new lenses when I finally sold my F5.. but kept my 80-200 2.8nicnichols
- I have the 70-200 f2.8 and the new 14-24, just in case********

recommended lens for D700?
- nicnichols0
for the 700 I would get a range in the neighborhood of 18-55, 55-105 then something fast and big like the 80-200 2.8 <- that is the lens I use more then any of them.. I have a 35 2.0 thats nice for low light as well...
- <-- don't get that 18-300 or whatever it is.. to long of a drawnicnichols

85mm 1.4?
50mm 1.4?i read that these are getting updated this month
- tkmeister0
For zoom, 14-24, 24-70 and 70-200. I would just start with 24-70mm first.
Prime lenses
50 1.4
85 1.4
105 2.0

24-70 so darn pricey
i do love 14-24
- senseg0
i heard new 5D is soon, no?
- tkmeister0
14-24 is very very wide on D700. I tried it and the first thing I realized is that 24mm is actually 24mm and not 36mm. For someone who's used to using a DX camera, that's a big change. Also, with a full frame, you can get even thinner DOF so you can really get an amazing pop and subject separation as well as great color saturation. But all in all, I've heard that when you print, the difference is not that noticeable.
D700+24-70 is the best you can get for the money at this time, i mean it's about $4500 together so it better do damn well. At J&R the guy I talked to was willing to give me a deal if I bought both together.
So, I would recommend you buy the D700 and try out for a week. My D300 should arrive tomorrow, so you can compare the 2 and decide.
