I have an XTi and love it. I'm a noob also, but I read a lot and I have a few patient camera nerds to help me out.
I bought mine 2 years ago. I've been able to learn a lot and I think it's perfect for starting out.
I just got the 50mm lens posted about by Lo_Fi. It's awesome.

Also consider adding a fast prime to your kit like the 50mm f1.8 II. I think it's only $129 but you'll love the results wide open.

i didn't read much of this post, but if you are talking about the 70-200 f4, GREAT choice.
Art Wolfe uses it
http://www.artwolfe.com/- Yeah, it's optically identical to the $1400 70-200 f4L IS. for less than half the price. It's a killer deal.Lo_Fi

Nice...
Honestly try futureshop for that 70-200 L series.
It's more that $100 cheaper than Vistek , and it's one of the sharpest lenses available.

canon 50D out, i still shoot with the 10D from 2003, but it's fantastic, and it was cheap.

Live view is a cool gimmick but still not developed to the point where it's really useful. Needs a few more years to figure out the focusing issues.

The Xti is an excellent camera, and the prices have come down dramatically over the last few months. If you do go for a Canon you should consider this lense...

It's pro quality glass and not super expensive. I think Futureshop has it for $669.
Honestly....you'll be happy with whatever you decide to buy, the competition between the manufacturers is so intense these days that everyone is making an incredible product. Even at the low end.
Image quality in all these cameras has gotten so good that it is really more than any amateur photographer will ever need. If you've ever compared the files from a $600 xti vs an $8000 1ds Mk3 you would be amazed how similar they are considering the price difference. My advice, go to the shop and see which one feels most comfortable in your hands. People underestimate how important this can be.
- I can get one for $449, which is why I am asking :)Jaline

what you mean live view?

Anyone own an XTi? How is it? I read some of the previous threads here and elsewhere, and it seems like it's a smaller, cheaper, and decent camera for an amateur.

does the d60 have AF in the body?

D80 is not new, D90 which comes out in two week is new.

shoot film!

Is there a huge difference between the Nikon D60 and the D80? I know the D80 is new, but the D60 is smaller and $200 cheaper.
I can get it for $499, whereas the D80 is $699, which is why I am wondering if I should get the D60 and then just spend money on a nice lens.

- Thanks. I am currently searching Google about this as well :)Jaline
- Hmm...I do like the idea of a live view-magiggy, but we'll see...Jaline
- (i am also considering dinky's and tk's offers, depending on shipping, etc.)Jaline
- just buy from TK. he is more careful with his camera. but tell him to send it via normal post not fedex cause you will get charged duty.MrDinky
- charged duty. sending it via US post is not likely but sometimes you mightMrDinky

Umm....soo....being the camera n00b I am, I emailed my prof to ask her some more questions about the camera, and she clarified:
"For example, a 75 - 300 mm, a 55 - 300, a 28 - 200 are all ok. The ref I gave in class for not ok, was 100 - 300."
Whoops! My bad.
I think I'll be getting the XSi, so any suggestions for a lens between one of these ranges would be awesome. Unless you already mentioned it (I am going back through these suggestions again).

Aww...you guys are all so helpful.

I'm running with the D90. First DSLR to shoot video. And the Nikorr 105mm f2.8 Macro is a fine fine lens. I love mine to bits.
Have a look at this guys site, he does great reviews which might help you decide. Whatever you do buy, have fun!

I've heard really good stuff about this lense:
http://www.henrys.com/webapp/wcs…maybe a bit out of your price range at Henry's... could probably find it cheaper elsewhere or used.
