quoted from my boss about 5 mins ago.
being a fan of poster design, i took offense and wanted to punch him in the face.
he's old, out of touch, and very opinionated.
im curious, does anyone else agree with this statement?

graphic design is dead, long live graphic design

i could have started an hour debate with him on how he is wrong, but he pays me... and recently just gave me a raise.

You are more than within your rights to have an opinion

It's about about posters on digital screens now.

How can you debate a guy who is 100% wrong? Wouldn't be a debate it would be an educational experience.

Design is Dead®

If a company like Viacom or JCDecaux say 'posters are dead' I might give it some thought...

I actually had this opinion today after reading a thread similar to this... it stated that Art as we know it is on the decline. I could not argue more against that. ART is rebelling against the main stream. Art is thriving. Go to the galleries, get outside, see the artists that are making it by doing their own thing.. DESIGN is on the decline, and the value of it has been leaking for awhile.
- analysts who says this ignore the fact that art has always had declines and increases throughout historyeighteen

Posters as short run, art objects are definitely not dead. As a mass medium? Not dead, but not thriving totally either...

re iggyboo... You think so? Really? What meaningful art is out there these days?
- Meeklo0
What exactly is a poster these days?
if its a piece of paper with artwork or a design being held like this:Then no, it is more alive than ever, a single print on a large paper canvas being held by a person on a photograph.
If by poster, he believes that a poster only becomes a poster once its being sticked to a wall or a telephone pole..
then he might be right..

Meaningful is a biased perspective but...
I heard about the waterfalls placed in Nyc the other day. That sounds really cool some dutch artist created them as a way of mixing nature into a surreal cityscape. Interesting... albeit maybe not your taste.
Half of the mainstream design you see in ad campaigns and brands are researched and experimented upon by many a designer, photographer, and visual artist alike. These experimentations are so far from their roots by the time they reach the mainstream for ad campaigns etc. that they're watered down. Look at the work that's being done on another forum that posts jobs that I can post it's name on here without getting my thread deleted.
Sites like posterwhore, imagekind, redbubble etc. have made poster designers worldwide able to create relatively affordable ways to sell their work.
and last but not least I'd suggest bookmarking the arts section of the new york times. You can read a lot of cool stuff happening globally. I'll leave you with one cool tidbit. check out what they did on the bienelle in australia. They took the opera house in sydney and turned its guts into a jungle. I love that, you take the expected and the functional and create the majestic... I dunno its all opinion but art is very much alive and breathing. Many a time I think its in response to the harder times many people are facing too. When you aren't busy designing artists are still creating work its in our blood.

Make a poster that says: "__________ is dead." with his name in the blank space, and tell him you'll put it in his coffin when that solemn comes.

When old people say something is dead, it’s concrete proof that that thing has probably never been more alive.
