ive had my work in a few publications, yeah its a good thing to get - especially for the ol' portfolio and its a bit of a "thumbs-up" from your peers.nobody has said its a BAD thing to get your work in these publications.
my point earlier was that a LOT of the stuff in those publications are in there because the publication 'knows' that person.
im not saying their work is shit thats appearing.
but certainly, a lot of the time there is a lot of work out there that is of the same kaliber , if not better, but these people will never appear on these pages as they dont shout about their work or phone up magazines spouting off every story theyve got for PR under the sun or they dont take out advertising with the magazine or they arent from london lol.

It focusses to much on a very small fragment of what we do,
i am very dissapointend in the latest issues.
I tend to read more and more non design magazines and read old
issues of Upper & Lower Case or just by great books.

A vile review actually! Bad reviews we can deal with. The book was Communicating with Pattern: Stripes which like I say has become a best seller in ten countries: foreword is by Ben Kelly, and our latest has got Lance Wyman - a design hero of ours - writing the foreword for that. Both of whom loved the books - so we are happy with that.
It was also really upsetting as, unlike Grafik, we have featured a lot of new designers and photographers who would not neccessarily get the opportunity to be featured anywhere else, and we felt responsible for them - I mentiond this incident here as i wanted to give everyone an insight into how Grafik deal with anyone who questions their 'authority'. And as regard to Karma - we'll see - maybe we should hold a huge party when it folds - shouldn't be long now...

Let it go..
Nobody worth their salt as a designer takes that magazine seriously. It's poorly written and the layout has gone from bad to worse over the years...
- yup - and it sthe last i'll say on the matter - honest - even if temptedLucan

What does everyone make of the new issue?
http://www.grafikmagazine.co.uk/…
Parts of it are nice... and then others are horrible. There are some weird things going on with lines linking questions and answers and also some spreads have a word which repeats over and over and looks as if it was designed by a blind person. Basically the first couple of spreads were ok and then it lost me.

Monocle is the refined gentleman's choice: www.monocle.com
although they always seem to conclude that whatever it is "Japan does it better". Shopping, Architecture, Food, Fashion, etc...of from Japan:
www.studiovoice.jpJapan has some great looking magazines much better than you'll ever see in the UK/US. But one is unable to read them.

I picked up a copy of the re-designed Grafik in the news agents the other day, with an air of excitement and trepidation, and after a brief thumb through it went straight back on the shelf!
I think the problem is, as most have echoed in the whole thread, over the years its lost it's way, it's without contents, direction, and perhaps crucially as far as it's editorial design goes 'shocking' I mean look how well crafted Eye Magazine (Esterson) or Baseline (Dieter Reichert) are by contrast, you certainly feel slightly happier to part with the cash for such a high cover price, but perhaps it's biggest competitor CR is looking very polished, but what they have got right and Grafik haven't is the introduction of the Blog, as this is where a lot of people now head for their visual fixes, and CR are engaging the readers, albeit in a different medium from the preferred, it is still createing dialouge, discourse, but most importantly a following (even the letters page relies on the jucier posts from the blog) and this must only help strengthen the CR brand and keep people handing over their money, because at least CR seem to have something to say, want to say something, and this shows a more human side to the mag.
I feel Grafik has been left behind, not just by other publications, but the web as a whole has taken control of our visual needs, blog sites are springing up everywhere, all chocked full of links to great inspiration, design agencies are now posting up lots of nice, big detailed images of their work or setting up blogs to show off their very latest pieces, which IMO was always the pull of Grafik, that section in the front, in fact I've bought copies of it in the past based on getting a few detailed thumbnails of the latest Cartlidge Levene project, an experience I can have at the click of a mouse.
