I picked up a copy of the re-designed Grafik in the news agents the other day, with an air of excitement and trepidation, and after a brief thumb through it went straight back on the shelf!
I think the problem is, as most have echoed in the whole thread, over the years its lost it's way, it's without contents, direction, and perhaps crucially as far as it's editorial design goes 'shocking' I mean look how well crafted Eye Magazine (Esterson) or Baseline (Dieter Reichert) are by contrast, you certainly feel slightly happier to part with the cash for such a high cover price, but perhaps it's biggest competitor CR is looking very polished, but what they have got right and Grafik haven't is the introduction of the Blog, as this is where a lot of people now head for their visual fixes, and CR are engaging the readers, albeit in a different medium from the preferred, it is still createing dialouge, discourse, but most importantly a following (even the letters page relies on the jucier posts from the blog) and this must only help strengthen the CR brand and keep people handing over their money, because at least CR seem to have something to say, want to say something, and this shows a more human side to the mag.
I feel Grafik has been left behind, not just by other publications, but the web as a whole has taken control of our visual needs, blog sites are springing up everywhere, all chocked full of links to great inspiration, design agencies are now posting up lots of nice, big detailed images of their work or setting up blogs to show off their very latest pieces, which IMO was always the pull of Grafik, that section in the front, in fact I've bought copies of it in the past based on getting a few detailed thumbnails of the latest Cartlidge Levene project, an experience I can have at the click of a mouse.
