I think something happened to your iMac, and you should contact Apple about it.

I reckon the imac sensed its surroundings and attempted suicide

I had a very similar thing happened, OTB though. What I did was reset some stuff.
First PRAM: restart the machine and hold alt+command+p+r before you hear the chime. hold that for a couple of chimes.
Then I reset something else by unplugging ALL wires from the iMac. Then hold the power button for 10 seconds. Still holding it, plug the power in. Start it up. At this point my fans were running nonstop.
Then I did the same thing as above but held for 15 seconds and let it go. Then plugged it in.
I have no idea what my problem was or what fixed it. But thats what I did. My conclusion was that my fans / heat sensors were messed up and the machine overheated under a heavy load.

Also if tech support gives you issues, email and executive customer service will call you within a few hours and fix your problem quick. I think within 30 days you can claim it DOA and either get it replaced or repaired (your choice).
