Barack Obama's planned campaign rally and speech in Berlin on Thursday is roiling the German political class, reports Der Spiegel (article in German). Authorities in Berlin are preparing for a million spectators, which would instantly make Obama's speech the biggest political event in that country since unification in 1990. There are even plans to close down the street, a mile long, and replicate the setup during the World Cup with massive projection screens.

it's really funny how all the major anchors are following him around all puppy-eyed for his trip there...like they'd ever do that w/mccain who's been there tons of times.
(and like designbot, i don't support mccain. i dislike them both and am only pointing out the bias)
- They covered McCain and Lieberman in Iraq thoroughly. McCain embarrassed himself.Mimio

on Universalism....
Obama...claims to be a Christian as everyone knows.
But when pressed on this issue he folds and says that he believes all paths lead to God basically. Which for most on this board probably doesn't matter much (and that's fine). The irony is that when you look at even a few of the major world religions and their teachings, you see that they have completely different messages (contradictory in most cases) and are mutually exclusive. I don't care if he believes this or not (or whether or not people here agree or disagree), just don't claim to be a christian.
- So he can't be a Christian while also believing everyone's individual path is equally valid?harlequino
- I personally believe he is doing what Bush did...trying to play the religion card to get votes.designbot
- Interpretation is what it's called and he can ecumenical if he desires. Very fair and enlightened perspective actually.Mimio
- pah, if he has to lie to get the idiot fundies to vote for him, then all power to him. People are idiots, do what you have to.mikotondria3
- Playing the religion card??? While right wing radio is still calling him a "muslim". WHich side is playing the religion card?TheBlueOne
- agree w/designbot. he says that but he probably doesn't believe it..just trying to appeal to a broader base.sputnik2

Well designbot, you better put official Catholic doctrine and the Pope on your little list of universalist hate there next to the O-man, from the Pontifical Commission for Interreligious Dialogue (1984):
"The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council . . . affirm that in the religious traditions of non-Christians there exist "elements which are true and good" (LG, 16), "precious things, both religious and human" (GS, 92), "seeds of contemplation" (AG, 18), "elements of truth and grace" (AG, 9), "seeds of the Word" (AG, 11; 15), and "rays of that truth which illumines all humankind" (NA, 2). According to explicit conciliar indications, these values are found and preserved in the great religious traditions of humanity. "
- Damn Pope!! Fucking universalist!! I hope he doesn't claim to be christian!TheBlueOne
- I'm not Catholic.designbot
- whatever.TheBlueOne

In a stunning diplomatic breakthrough for Barack Obama, Iraq's prime minister yesterday endorsed the Democratic candidate's 16-month timeline for withdrawing combat troops from Iraq.
Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki endorsed the Obama approach in a July 18 interview with the German magazine Der Spiegel, just as President Bush and Sen. John McCain were touting a vague new commitment to a "horizon" for withdrawal. The New York Times did not report the Maliki statement in its July 19 edition.Uncertainty about Maliki's surprise statement persists since his top political spokesman told the Times only one week ago that troop withdrawals would take three to five years, if not longer. [NYT, July 11]. The number of American troops he would request as counter-terrrorism units, trainers and advisers could be tens of thousands.
But as Obama's plane touched down in Afghanistan, Maliki's comments were having a far-reaching effect on the war and presidential politics, with the Maliki government withdrawing from George Bush and making McCain appear foolish.

Look, I LIKE McCain. Probably a good guy at heart. Love to sit and have a beer with the guy. Certainly loves his country, and his sacrifice while in uniform is undeniable and worthy of honor. But IMHO he'd be a piss poor president, considering his policies, age, and the temperment of the moment.
Where I lost all respect for McCain was in 2000 when Bush's campaign fucking slandered him from here to hell and back during the Republican primaries, and McCain sucked it up and smiled and played nice nice after. It really undermined his credibility for me - meaning he didn't live up to his reputation as the tough guy military maverick - who I expected to pull Bush aside, rip off his neck and shit down it. He didn't...
- Not to mention changing positions on taxes, immigration, etc.ukit
- isn't he supposed to have a helluva mean temper?sputnik2
- there you go, kick the "silent generation" to the curb. http://en.wikipedia.…robotron3k
- Yeah..I expect that from all politicians from one degree to another though.TheBlueOne
- McCain can't even log on to the internet. True fact!boobs
