I reckon they should email it in 10mb chunks.

while i'm not surprised, i do find it slightly annoying that some incompetent american judge has attacked the privacy of every internet user on the planet.

I think the future for YouTube will be providing legal content, ie user uploaded videos that they've made themselves, or things that are out of copyright.
As more and more tv channels go down the route of on demand, free players (iPlayer, 4OD) with full length programs, there will be less need for copyrighted content to even be put youtube. Plus youtube is limited to short clips. The fact that southpark have made all their episode availbe for free is a sign of things to come.
Youtube should start trying to change now and get all the studios they pissed off on board. They may be able to get consent to let studios give them short clips or older material, or even use their expertise in helping them set up their own video sites.
Alternatively they could split youtube down the middle: the free user driven stuff, and then a separate section for approved copyrighted material.Either they will need to accept change or lose ground to the ever growing on demand sites

Very optimistic BaskerviIle.
However, radiohead proved that sometimes you can't even give something away without someone wanting to steal it instead.I personally foresee ISP's blocking all copyrighted content, and then charging for access. You'll pay a flat subscription to access all that content - much like your TV license.

how can you discriminate the copyrighted content from all the non-copyrighted one?

Stephen Fry has written a great piece on the subject of the future of the liscense fee and has read it in his most recent podcast, it's worth listening to, he makes some interesting points:

Very easily.- on youtube it's easy in terms of general downloading it's not at all.oozie
- there's still a major grey area that neither google or viacom are willing to acknowledge. personal and public domain videos have been taken down in the name of copyrightoozie

Dude, internet already costs me 60$ a month, it's more than my satelite tv bill. They can go fart in a lake if they want more cash. Find a way to make advertising pay for it w/e.

Aside from people uploading whole movies, I don't see the arm in uploading music videos which are advertisement and advertisement is like supposed to reach people for free, you don't charge people for the right to be advertised a product.

what can they actually do with this info? kelpie brought up a point I was thinking how much this data is actually worth to viacom way beyond copyright infringment etc. there is must be some nudge nudge wink wink going on between google and viacom over this entire court battle. copyright is besides the point I'm sure...like any large media company could sue google or anyone to get all their data and exploit it

hahahaha, good luck with that then!
