I think the future for YouTube will be providing legal content, ie user uploaded videos that they've made themselves, or things that are out of copyright.
As more and more tv channels go down the route of on demand, free players (iPlayer, 4OD) with full length programs, there will be less need for copyrighted content to even be put youtube. Plus youtube is limited to short clips.The fact that southpark have made all their episode availbe for free is a sign of things to come.
Youtube should start trying to change now and get all the studios they pissed off on board. They may be able to get consent to let studios give them short clips or older material, or even use their expertise in helping them set up their own video sites.
Alternatively they could split youtube down the middle: the free user driven stuff, and then a separate section for approved copyrighted material.Either they will need to accept change or lose ground to the ever growing on demand sites
