well with "Island" being bigger than the other text it does seem to make it "lean" left
i kinda liked it better when it was all the same size, but i do like it clipped behind the horizon a bit

what about a low opacity reflection in the water toward the right... gives a little depth, creates a form and looks more like an island?

Penguin 2.0

you won't win because the title will be illegible to be people walking past

...and 20 percent of the entries will be like it

Love it, but prefer the 1st colour scheme (more blue).

Make the logo bigger. Oh, and make the penguin a portrait of a french hooker from Henry Miller's "Tropic of Cancer". Could you also add a nice reflective surface look that doesn't abide by physics or logic? Is there any way we can get 2 or 3 more typefaces in there? People get quite bored when they can only see 1.
Can we get Batman in there?
Heath Ledgers dead... Can we make a seal or something that shows that even Hollywood fat cat's care?
What about Tom Cruise? Scientology is escapism.
Hm. Other than that.. It's great. But I still think the gulls & waves need a tiny bit more weight.

i really like it. although mime has a point about it possibly not being picked because of the type being lost (by the average passer-byer), but i think he is dead wrong about 20% of the entries looking like this.
fine job skt. fine job indeed.

hasn't anyone noticed that the cover design doesn't even follow the synopsis of the book?
- meaning is overrated. even the author probably doesn't know what the book is about********

Could it work with a completely different color scheme if you made the text more "island"-like and therefore not rely on the blue so much? I like this version, but not being tethered to the gray-blue might allow it do jump out more.

- + that's one darn attractive Scotch Roman.gramme
- btw gramme I never seen your post re stacked type. I was suggesting it too, not calling you cheesy. Thot I'd clear that up.Jnr_Madison
- I will, for once, have to disagree with you here. That cover is balls.brains
- no worries Junior :)gramme

(it looks better in person, great printing)gramme - The type is nice, but graphically I'm sure something stronger could be used.brains
- But you know what gramme, you or I could probably do something much more striking.brains
- Also that R and L is making me suffer a little bit. Something needs to be done.brains
- you're right, either of us could prolly improve on it.gramme

ok... i REALLY liked the first color combo better... the lack of contrast implies a bit more of a hazy/lost feeling, which makes sense with the title...
Italic text on the horizon seems to imply movement, and actually feels more like a ship than an island... just a thought.
I really like it, though. I think either way you have a strong shot at the contest.

if that cover were a beach house I'd rent it for the summer

"...and 20 percent of the entries will be like it"
i would have hoped for something a little more constructive from you.
oh well.

"hasn't anyone noticed that the cover design doesn't even follow the synopsis of the book?"
i'm not sure that is the primary purpose of a book cover though. I can't think of many covers that give you the synopsis visually.
i could be wrong, but i have tried to approach it by refining a basic element of the story (the island) into a cover using as few elements as possible.
i'm no illustrator so i had no real choice but to approach it like this.

anyway, thanks for all your comments.

I still like it just but I can hear them saying the title is too small to read on a book shelf.
You could try a version of the text much larger and stacked into the shape of an island. You could mess around with the font so it's half way between an illustration and a typeface (a wee bit like si scott).
