Advertising is of course top level bollocks but design is surely a means of delivering an advertising message.

are adverts not designed?
- neue75_bold0
indeed. Design is a bit more presumptuous even. At least generally advertising is based a bit more around research... I don't think I have the energy today to really get into though...
some decent and somewhat related discussion here though http://www.qbn.com/topics/554480…

i'm a "user experience designer" of unnecessary things.
- so am i.skt

consider the humble paperclip. it is designed for a function (holding separate pieces of paper together). it doesn't pretend to do anything else. that's honest.
designing a T-shirt that attempts to pigeon hole two particular creative processes isn't being fair to either. that's not honest.
and if i can be honest, i might be talking bollocks.

advertising isn't always lying. in its purest sense advertising simply makes people aware of a product or service.

when i was at art college doing my graphic design degree there was a guy in the class who got hooked by 'the church' in the final year. there was a point a few months before the degree show where he was questioning in the eyes of the church if graphicdesign/advertising etc was ethical. selling dreams or false promises etc.
At least advertising etc has to be 'relatively' truthful, you get what it says on the tin otherwise you'll get your money back.
It's a pity the church isnt so accountable for its claims, beliefs or statements. lol.
Walking on water ... pics or it never happened.
The Last Supper .... pics or it never happened.- at least he was trying to be a good person, nothing wrong with that...vespa

ADVERTISING isnt lying (as you can get your money back!) but it IS misleading ......
For Example:
"..... gives you healthy looking hair...."
it doesnt say it actually gives you HEALTHY hair ... just healthy LOOKING hair.- that's not misleading at all, quite the contrary. caveat emptor! your hair may not *actually* be healthy.paraselene

All those capital letters. Yuck.

ads lie on a case-by-case basis. they position the image of the product or service at a certain distance from the experience of the product or service. it has to be far enough away to leave room for fantasy, but close enough not to piss people off. it's a delicate balance.
add to that the insatiable demands of the consumer for novelty, and the almost shamanic power that brands have been given in our society and you've got a pretty fraught industry that people feel incredibly strongly about. everyone gets snarky about advertising because they're so goddamned invested in it.
- what i mean to say is that 'advertising is lying' is a pretty puerile statement.paraselene

rather than simple communication
– Dr_Randstyle can be the message but it's no excuse for not having something to say... whether you're right or wrong..
– neue75_boldkeyword "seem"
– neue75_boldany one thing "says" something which is why decoration is so pernicious
– capsizeand why no-one says they are a decorator of type
– capsizeif they are not decoration then this is what design will look like through all eternity
– Dr_Randor decorator of honesty
– neue75_boldnothing wrong with that, leave assumption, emotion and portrayal to the talkies...
– neue75_boldrestore default settings...
– neue75_boldI'm saying I don't believe it will stay that way through all eternity--and that there is no such thing as pure functional communication
– Dr_Randcommunication. We are all influenced by fashion, decoration, whether we know it or not
– Dr_RandI agree there is nothing wrong with that. I'm skeptical that designers embracing this aesthetic will still be doing so in the next round of fashion
– Dr_Randthe next fashion go-round
– Dr_Randof course, and realistically these solutions are only so abundant in cultural context, commercially they'll never
– neue75_boldfully resonate...
but that is a pity..
– neue75_boldthe designer will still remain to be more important than the product, client or target audience..
– neue75_boldHIGH FIVE!
– Dr_RandHIGH FIVE!
– neue75_bold1- in the noting regarding the fact that communication should the main criteria of which good design should be based..neue75_bold
- and by good communicative design I mean that which is based on an honest portrayal of the product one is designing for..neue75_bold

Thats an fairly pretentious, ugly fucking tshirt whatever the message and however you look at it.
- skt0
i don't think it is ugly, in fact i quite like it, just the message is overy simplistic and more than a little arrogant.
