"I think we've been through a period where too many people have been given to understand that if they have a problem, it's the government's job to cope with it. 'I have a problem, I'll get a grant.' 'I'm homeless, the government must house me.' They're casting their problem on society. And, you know, there is no such thing as society. There are individual men and women, and there are families. And no government can do anything except through people, and people must look to themselves first. It's our duty to look after ourselves and then, also to look after our neighbour. People have got the entitlements too much in mind, without the obligations. There's no such thing as entitlement, unless someone has first met an obligation."
Prime minister Margaret Thatcher, talking to Women's Own magazine, October 31 1987

The Thatcher quote is a bit of a double-edged for me.
On the one hand I agree with it and represents a lot of the values my parents gave me. i.e. If you want good things in life, you have to work for them.
On the other hand, you can say, if we are all individuals, masters of our own destiny. And there is no such thing as society, then what do we need governments for?
I vote with my wallet these days anyway...

No OnesandZeros.
I'm deadly serious.
I manage to look after myself.
Tribes in Brazil manage to look after themselves.
Coal miners, Waitresses, and the Welsh, can not, and they demand fucking tips and concessions with the help of unions.
- so it's all ok if you're ok yes? what about old people with no family left? what about young people who have been abused or kicked out of their homes?vespa
- or kicked out of their homes? it's hard to get a job if you have no home.vespa
- Well Moth, I'm sorry you feel that way. I guess we're all entitled to our opinions.OnesandZeros
- BUT! I would think twice about bring up tribes in Brazil, because I'm assuming you know absolutely nothing about them.OnesandZeros
- what about entire stratches of the country not so fortunate to be situated in the monied south which were fucked for generations...kelpie

What little I care to understand about British politics until it started affecting me (10 years ago) was that Thatcher developed a culture obsessed with profit, the conservatives privatised pretty much everything they could get away with, which lead to a decline that damaged most industries, most notably Public transport, which is pretty much why we have to put up with the disgusting mangled joke of a service we all are use to today!
I mean all governments are shit, Labour doesn't stand for what it use to, the reason being is that the people it stood up for and built it's foundations on no longer exist, I mean what do we manufacture any more? what is our industry? we are a nation of consultants, business heads in London on £50,000+ drive this country today, and that is why the every day man/woman gets taxed so much and so often and the rich still seem top get the tax breaks!
- there was a little red book that came out with the economist recently. i was mildly surprised to learn that the major export of the uk is "media and culture."paraselene
- of the uk is 'media and culture'.paraselene
- Yep consultants are the people the government must keep happy in this country!!uncle_helv

Concessions when you need them Vespa. I don't mean we should end all benefits and charity. We need to cease peoples opinion that they have a god-given right to the world and a job. Shit happens. There will never be a job for everyone, and I for wouldn't have sent peoples down a mine to dig up coal that we don't need just so they can have a job.
And what about our tube workers? Have ever a bunch greedy assholes existed? I would do it in an instant. I would fire every one of them who would dare fucking strike, and give the job to someone who appreciates 30k a year - you know - the homeless or down-on-their-luck.
- so you mean, keep things the same as they are, but try and have better assessment?vespa

Agree moth.
What I can't understand is this love for the miners. A lot of 'em who lived in our village (when I was a kid) were a right bunch of lazy arses, who seemed to spend more time in the club and in the bookies than at work. Then most of 'em got whacking payouts and effectively retired in their 40's, bought their houses and got a new car.
