I've been doing research for the same thing lately, and read an article in the dr's office today about synthetic diamonds and how jewelers can't even tell the difference anymore with some of them.
And that makes me think - even if something made in a lab is cheaper - but it's better, flawless, perfect - 95% of the time it won't be acceptable. I think that's crazy.
It's so hard to know these days if someone lost their hands or head for the diamond you have. You have to pay way more for certified ones that prove no one was brutalized for it.
Regardless, I am saving money as much as I can.
- Exchange the word "diamonds" with "boobs" and it makes more sense.blaw

being: 1. a girl and 2. engaged, trust me when i say get her a diamond. unless she has made it clear that she wants something else, she probably doesn't.
after my fiance proposed with his grandma's ring, we designed a custom ring together at a local jeweler and it turned out amazing. if that's not an option for you, www.bluenile.com actually has some really nice diamonds. learn your 4 C's!

I watched the documentary Empire In Africa the other night... it really put a lot of shit into perspective. personally, I could care less about jewelry and have never owned a diamond in my life. I know other shit I own is just as worthless and in some cases just as damaging to human lives (car and other shit "made in <insert 3rd world country here>")
Also, why is the guy giving up 3 months of his salary?! That is insane... if marriage takes two, and considering that men and women are in the workplace these days I think it should be a co-operative effort for this ring thing... money really doesn't buy love, just hookers and shots of Wild Turkey

Yeah, in mainstream America it has to be a diamond, unfortunately.
IMO rubies and blue sapphires are just as beautiful and the sparkle is fantastic (don't forget we like the sparkle!)... some of those black pearls are just as nice.
