Please, for the love of god, don't go with a diamond - they are the most stupidly overvalued things ever. Don't buy into some cabal's deviously constructed marketing scheme.

Take the hit, nothing like being cheap with your future wifes engagement ring! Unless you are planning on divorce in 2-3 years

- you lose your wife because you didnt buy her a big enough diamond? sounds like love to me.mrdobolina

a diamond is only a rock, afterall. there are prettier rocks on this planet than some clear lookin thing. be more creative! don't go status-quo!
- - a million. only get a diamond.OnesandZeros
- i agree, diamonds are not a girls best friend..sea_sea

Pay more attention to cut, luminance etc than to size. There's nothing worse that a big crappy diamond. For 3K you won't get anything huge of quality but I think you can fins a decent half karat diamond for that.

Zales isn't a ripoff, its probably one of your best options if you're short on loot. Diamonds are priced based on weight aka carats, clarity and color. Places will base their price off of this, their really isn't a major price diff when shopping for the actual diamond. It's based on the options you choose for the 3 C's. So basically just look for places where you buy a diamond and get something extra for free or for a discount. Then just pick a diamond within those costs. Remember, you still need to buy the ring portion of it and the wedding ring too.

my ex wife and i pierced our tongues at the same time with 1 needle.
our tongues were layered on top of one another and the piercer pushed thru both of us [if anyone here knows about tongue piercing, you remember that after the piercing needle goes thru the tongue, they need to turn away and grab the stud for the tongue and they make you hold that giant needle that is thru your tongue, well needless to say it was rather sexy] after we were married we took out out piercings [ i had to take mine out way earlier as i grinded my teeth and chewed the piercing and cracked 3 molars] 3 root canals later....
haha!!

hiatus, don't listen to these guys. here in chicago we have 'jewelers row' which is pretty much just a shit load of places you can find rings and comparatively shop. i'm sure in ny there is a similar section of town. first things first see if you can get some tips from your future wife as to what kind of ring she's looking for. white gold? gold? platinum?... princess or round cut. marquee or solitaire. then take that info into the jeweler and price shop. what i ended up doing was buying a loose diamond at wholesale then finding the right ring to put it in. saved a ton of cash. and if you can make the jeweler show you the ring under the scope. look for scratches and flecks, then have them put the diamond on a pure white piece of paper to compare it's color. whiter the better. off the top of my head you can get a decent quality 1/2-3/4 carat solitare for that kind of cash. that is just engagement ring though. the wedding ring most of the time will wrap around the engagement ring and be soldered together to form one ring... like in the lord of the rings, but for chicks.

option D:
Get her cubic zirconia. If you're with her for two more years then think about switching it to a real one.

QVC has some nice deals I heard.

paying a ridiculous amount of money for a diamond is just that, ridiculous. Even though my wife's ring has diamonds in it, I don't think her ring cost more than $700. Personally, I think that is way over the top; my ring cost $85 (which since has been stolen, but that's another story, but at the same time I'm glad it was only $85). I'm just saying, I know people that are still paying on rings for their ex's that they got divorced from years ago. If spending an ass load of money on someone is how you show love then sure, it's the right thing for you guys and your situation. Me, I took the poor man practical route and am just as happy... plus, if she leaves me for any reason I can apply the money that would have been a monthly ring payment to child support and alimony!

Usually to get married you need a partner before a ring... you got that down?

If your soon to be wife is the type that gives a shit about the rock, then you have to spring for all you can. Nothing worse than getting a deal on a ring, but getting that "It's nice but.." face when you give it to her.
If she doesn't care so much (my wife didn't) i would spend more time and effort in HOW you propose, rather than what you propse with. This is what gave me the most amount of stress, but i thought up a creative idea, made it happen and it's one of the fondest memories we have.
And by the way, i spent less thatn $1000 and we'll be celebrating 4 yrs this summer.
