hiatus, don't listen to these guys. here in chicago we have 'jewelers row' which is pretty much just a shit load of places you can find rings and comparatively shop. i'm sure in ny there is a similar section of town. first things first see if you can get some tips from your future wife as to what kind of ring she's looking for. white gold? gold? platinum?... princess or round cut. marquee or solitaire. then take that info into the jeweler and price shop. what i ended up doing was buying a loose diamond at wholesale then finding the right ring to put it in. saved a ton of cash. and if you can make the jeweler show you the ring under the scope. look for scratches and flecks, then have them put the diamond on a pure white piece of paper to compare it's color. whiter the better. off the top of my head you can get a decent quality 1/2-3/4 carat solitare for that kind of cash. that is just engagement ring though. the wedding ring most of the time will wrap around the engagement ring and be soldered together to form one ring... like in the lord of the rings, but for chicks.

    • oh... and future congratulations. :)kona
    • Yea, don't go to "Jared's" or anything like that definitely. There is a reason real jeweler's don't need to advertise.
