I don't think i'm hijacking the thread but i was wondering about PCs for video and motion graphics stuff. i've heard alienware is awsome no matter what but is it really a legit option for a video work station or should i just put together a custom one somewhere?any others?
Something like this...

Best computer...guess those supercomputers excluded:
the build it yourself ones, if you splurge on all the latest thingamahjings. It'll be faster than any machine from any out-of-the-box ones available.Best laptop/note: harder to build yourself. I assume you'll design on it. So, max out the spec of a macbook pro - might not be the fastest - but all the other designers will do it. And if you don't, they'll bitch about it on this site.

it looks like falcon northwest are able to keep up. i'd look into them if my next machine wasn't going to be a mac.
also, if boxx tech makes some serious rigs too.

Well, put it this way, with PCs you have access to all the latest components that you can mix and match how you please, and with a mac you get what they decide you can have.
PCs will always be faster and more powerful, because users have the option of putting whatever the hell they like in the box.
Until Apple release a mac box, I firmly believe it will stay this way.
But, depends what you need - macs are plenty powerful, there are loads of video editors who use them etc, it just depends what you want.
I am biased towards PC, because apple basically says pcs are a load of shit, but under the skin, it IS a pc..
I think apple have the upper hand when it comes to more intuitive software though, or at least the community or 'scene' is there for it. I'd only go mac for the software.
