I was there as well a couple weeks ago. Gorgeous country. Stayed in Tamarindo, right in front of a nice reefbreak. We did the zipline tour also, although I didn't look like quite as much of a tool as wendog ;)
Tamarindo was nice in some ways, but EVERYTHING is under construction. Constant hammering, trucks, dust, etc. etc...
Good waves, I surfed in Tamarindo, Playa Grande and Playa Avellanas. Could have stayed there for a month. Was bummed that I couldn't make it to Ollie's Point or Witches Rock.
Travelling was an absolute bloody nightmare – got charged $680 to transport ONE board case (OK, it was a hard case w/ 3 boards, but still). If I can help it, I'll never fly Delta Airlines ever again. We're fighting it to the death, but I'm not very hopeful since it seems all Airline companies are shitting the collective customer service bed. Meh.

When I was there about 9 years ago, we traveled around quite a bit, but stayed in San Jose, Tortuguero, somewhere near Arenal, and a couple other places I can't remember the names of. Traveled mostly by boat, which was really cool, except most of the rivers were totally out of control due to some wicked monsoons. Thought I was going to die more than once. It was excellent. :)
Was a bit freaky when we got stopped at by border patrol in Nicaragua while on the Rio San Juan (i think?). The guards wanted a us to take a picture of them with all the women in our group. Who were we to tell a bunch of guys with big guns they couldn't have a picture? :)
Tortuguero was fantastic. Got to see giant sea turtles laying eggs on the beach and did some wicked hiking through the rain forests.
I highly recommend doing some sort of canal tour if you go there (in Tortuguero, that is)

I have a question::
Ill be going for a week in a few days and i am wondering about the money situation. Should I just take dollars? should i exchange the money there? with the locals? How did you guys go about this....
thanks

In most places, dollars are accepted, even welcome. The dollar is still much stronger than the colones; not to mention, it's around 490 colones to the dollar, so they round up to 500 and the locals make a tiny additional profit margin. Unless you'll be in the middle of nowhere, I really don't think you need to have your money transferred. I don't think there's an issue of "respect" for the locals. Money is money, and all the stores have calculators for that very reason.

drink an Imperial (or ten) for me while you're there.

Imperial = Corona in a different bottle.
