I just left as of January, so my perspective is fresh (and I was involved in the "newer" work). I did not mean to imply direct proximity to an ocean as an issue, as much as proximity to the stinky middle of the country being a problem, seems the farther inland you go, the worse it gets IMHO.

What's the atmosphere like @ Toky? It looks like a pretty big shop for a design firm.

Actually, it's pretty average sized (in my mind at least), 25-30 employees, about 15 on the design staff. Real good people there, life-long friends and a true devotion to good design. They are moving into a MASSIVE new space about 3 blocks from where they are now, have to be honest and say it's going to be a rad space to work in (14,000 Sqft for 30 people???), wish I could have seen it finished.

I was born/raised in STL but jumped ship at 19 to move to Minneapolis/St. Paul for school. Been here nearly eight years, and while I enjoy going back to visit STL, I'd never live there again.
But yeah, Toky is dope. Jay David is a fucking great designer and a great guy to boot...

I live in the area too. There are plenty of IT jobs here. I'm not going to recommend it as I don't have much to compare it too.

What gramme said and...
I too live and work here. I work for a great agency downtown called http://www.driveagency.com I've actuallly never heard of gramme's company (that doesn't really mean anything though, there are tons of companies here) There are some good in-house places as well. I've lived in alot of other places but st. louis is a great place to live. Easy to travel from, low cost of living, if you like the outdoors, southern missouri is pretty sweet. Good hiking, climbing and especially canoeing and kayaking. I live in the city in an area called Tower Grove. It's a very cool multi cultural neighborhood. Great restaurants and parks. Forest Park is the second larget urban park in the US, it's actually bigger than Central Park. St. Louis is pretty bike friendly and getting even friendlier as more and more bike lanes are being created. Downtown is really coming along. I've been here for 3 years and alot has changed. The city has been really getting after it. if you need any more info on companies, neighborhoods or whatever feel free to shoot me an email.

Hahaha, Tower Grove is ok, except for all the crime and the "Knockout Kings" (a gang of 13 year old kids) running around beating up women on the street with bricks and pipes. I lived on Magnolia for 1.5 years, worst place I lived the whole time. I would AIM for Benton Park myself, it's still close to the city, and ranked as the "up-and-comer" neighborhood in STL right now, last place I lived, and the best.

I work downtown at a large agency, it's not bad, easy to get into if you commute. St. Louis is a sleepy town, just big enough to feel like a city and just small enough to not feel over crowded. It has it's perks and short falls. Design wise it's hit or miss depending on the agency. One thing I'll say is it's a small town, you screw one company over they all know about it pretty quick.
Scottish arms sounds good, love that place, might have to meet a few of you guys on Sat. Try the Scotch Eggs there, they rock. Go Cubs.

wow. i've never heard of this. I guess anything can happen anywhere. I have not had any problems what so ever in my neighborhood and live on a great street with great neighbors.
- Yeah, I had the opposite experience I guess, there was a RASH of beatings and car jackings/shootings blocks from me right before I got out of there, good timing.NONEIS

@utopian
St. Louis is still a very segregated city. And they didn't include the suburbs in the statistics. Some days I love it here, more days I hate it here.
- Sounds like my city of Philly, it's a damn' shame...utopian
- yeah, I was talking to a guy from philly and he was like "st louis is like philly, but smaller."MikeColdFusion

I'm kinda surprised none of you STL designers are familiar with KLI. Deanna is well-known in the AIGA crowd, which is ironic because none of us ever have time to go to the in-town events (I'm too busy shooting the shit with you lot ;).
Noneis, IMO 35 people is getting big for a design firm...small to medium for an agency. These days tho, so many companies blend it all together, nobody seems to know the difference between an agency and a design firm anymore. I suppose we're a bit old-school in that we have no account people, we're just 5 designers, the owner / design director, her husband who works from home most of the time (handles the business mgmt. side) and an office manager. I like not having to deal with account people, to be honest. I have a question, I just go ask the client myself.
- I'm know about Kuhlman Leavitt. I think I even applied there for something years ago. Great work from what I've seen and heard.duckofrubber

Word, I definitely knew you guys, people who don't, just are not as connected as they think, you guys are very well known in the local scene out there ;D I guess you are right about all that, but, I spent most of my time working with about 6 different people, lots of teams and stuff, didn't "feel" big.
